D&D General D&D Evolutions You Like and Dislike [+]

And I'm frankly astounded that there are multiple people in this thread that think that's something a DM needs to outgrow. I enjoy player-driven and collaborative worldbuilding exercises, but the person responsible for providing the game world isn't allowed to decide what they put into it...

Okay, that is some heinous BS. There are a lot of people in this hobby that need to grow the hell up.

Speaking of reasons I'm no longer a part of this fandom.

How Complex Do You Prefer Your TTRPG Systems In General

Wrong generation. But when I tell people I'm five-foot-nine, I always follow it up with "niiice".

How Complex Do You Prefer Your TTRPG Systems In General

I don't know, somewhere in the 6-7 range. D&D 5e is too simple, but 3.5 and PF1 are too complex and I've heard PF2 is worse. You can use optional rules to sand PF1 down into the sweet spot. HARP is perfect. (On this point.) Palladium, not including RIFTS, is just about right. Alternity.

Yeah. The  concept of class limitations by ancestry is sound and valid-- with or without ancestral classes-- but the implementation left a lot to be desired. I think there  should be a default set in the core rules, but with a sidebar saying that it's not set in stone and umpires/tables should...

I love playing healer/buffer classes. One of the evolutions I'm grateful for is the fact that I'm no longer locked into Cleric if I want to play them. Not only do I just personally prefer keeping my friends alive and helping them fight better, but it makes the more Goodish members of the party...

Drop a fireball on me, we're cool; most of my friends try to kill me sooner or later anyway. Cast an enchantment spell on me, and after I've destroyed everything you ever loved, I will make you love new things just to take them away from you.

You, and the rest of the D&D fandom that I no longer belong to because of it. For the reasons I've stated. I'm perfectly content to disagree with you on this, but I'm not going to do so silently when my opinion is actually relevant to the topic of discussion.

I mean, sure. As far as I follow the argument-- I'm only seeing one side of it-- the main problem with the power is whether or not the power can compel an ally into an unwanted action, or if it only grants the ally a bonus if they take the action. The Warlord power says that the target ally can...

Except my point was that those elements were not incorporated at all because they were replaced with "close enough" alternatives that bear only superficial resemblance to the things they were replaced with. Dark Sun Campaign Setting did not need to shoehorn dragonborn and tieflings in at all...

D&D General Friday Fun: What Are Your Top 3 Playable Species

I'm really not going to able to narrow it down to three. I go hard for human and half-orc, githzerai and githyanki, and the really nonhuman stuff like thri-kreen/xixchil, lizardfolk, and warforged. Hobgoblin and bugbear. I really liked tieflings in AD&D, but modern D&D ruined them.

My position's a little more nuanced than that... but it's not a lot more nuanced than that. Game mechanics should reflect something that is diegetically occurring the game's fiction, and the way the game mechanic works should be based on what is diegetically occurring in the fiction...

Each class in 5e is half the size of a class in 4e, even including all of the subclass information. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but that's because the structure of 4e classes gave them a lot more options that 5e classes don't get, and 5e leaning even harder into the 4e "if the thing you...

Bard wasn't a core class in 1e; Barbarian and Sorcerer weren't core in 1e or 2e, and the Sorcerer represented a mechanical niche in 3.X that didn't exist in 4e. They took a backseat to the Four in the Core, the Ranger and Paladin (core in both editions of AD&D and 3e) and the Warlock and...

    Dumb Game Ideas: Mash-Ups

Masters of the Universe +  Shadowrun. Basically all of your PCs are (4e) Magician Adepts, get to split their Magic rating accordingly. Eternia is a massive city-planet... and  you are not the Masters of the Universe. You can do a lot of crazy stuff with SR4. You can take basically any WW/OP...

    Dumb Game Ideas: Mash-Ups

Shameless Plug: This is my modus operandi. I've got two major WIP settings (to go with my hot mess of a house system) that are basically this: Shroompunk is basically Mario + He-Man as a brutal sword & sorcery setting. Cosmic Rangers is Phantasy Star, except taking a couple of steps closer to...

    Does anyone have Kickstarter regrets?

I regret not backing more Kickstarters than I regret backing. The only Kickstarter I wanted to back, that I really would have regretted, dropped when I was homeless-- and that's a story everyone knows. I regret backing a lot of Kickstarters and BackerKits because I'm on a very limited income...
