OSR What's more important for a retroclone?

One factor might be that in the OP you mention Shadowdark. I think that it's a great game and it's very popular, but it is not (and does not want to be) a retroclone.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rate D&D 2024

Wikipedia says that it launched in August 2017 and I've been a member of the forums since March 2017. So, probably, in early '17 the site was up and in August they started selling products.

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

Personally, I'm not blind to the trend, I simply don't like it. I've got no delusions about inverting it...

OSR What's more important for a retroclone?

I agree. A clone, by definition is a copy, so it has to be as close as possible to the original while offering clarifications and better organization and accessibility. Games inspired by the spirit of older games can be wonderful, of course. They simply are not clones. Ascending AC, on the...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

Yes, it is nice to organize a game and use it for video calls, but it is just terrible as a forum. I wish companies stopped using it.

D&D General This Makes No Sense: Re-Examining the 1e Bard

As I've argued already in the thread, you have to decide at character creation to be a bard. It's not something you decide later on and this is why you don't follow all the rules for dual-classing; for example a half-elf, can't dual-class but may become a bard. I don't know, but my...

D&D General This Makes No Sense: Re-Examining the 1e Bard

It doesn't matter, because the character is a bard, not a thief. It means that you roll starting age using the same formula for fighters.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

There is more. In 1e, recovering spells takes a long time. At high levels, you can't unload all your spells and recover them next day. Also, a lot of spells had complications/restrictions that were removed or mitigated. Then everyone started to complain about broken casters...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

IMO it is not. Changing to thief is a special thing that bards (and only bards) can do.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

But the bard is not dual classing so the character does not have to meet the requirement for dual-classing.

D&D General This Makes No Sense: Re-Examining the 1e Bard

There is a pre-bard. What happens with a helm of opposite alignment (or in dozen of other situations one can think up) in undetermined because EGG didn't think too much about this. I also believe that there were few PHB bards in actual play. The only one that I've seen was a character that...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I'm familiar with this position (which is reasonable), but I disagree. You decide to be a bard at the time of creation. You must meet the bard's requirements and the you begin your fighter levers, later you switch to thief and finally to fully-fledged bard.

D&D General This Makes No Sense: Re-Examining the 1e Bard

I'm not arguing the main point that the 1e bard is a silly class (even though I love the idea of a "celtic" bard close to druids), but my assumption has always been that bard rules supersede those for dual-classing, so it's dex 15. My assumption is that you must "declare" to be a bard at...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

That is one long debate. My interpretation has always been that the rules for bards entirely supersede those for dual classing.

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

I consider druids to be quite powerful. Illusionists are too, but they do require a creative player and a DM who is willing to let them shine.

    Spoilers Alien: Earth Spoiler Thread

I found this a weak episode. They went overboard, IMO, and they crossed the line from horror to ridiculous. Still the smart alien should prove interesting in the next episodes.
