What do you miss from the good ol' days?

Not having to work and hanging out with my friends gaming for the entire weekend. Our only worry was that the GM's mom would make him go home early for church.

    Henchmen, Followers, Cohorts and Companions

My group generally runs one character, but personally, I like NPCs, both as a player and GM. (But not a GM PC...everyone hates those) I like cohorts to fill roles that the party may not have covered, like a tracker, trapsmith, sage...etc. They also serve as a great info conduit from the GM...

Hardest things to balance in game

I've had the same problem. A tweaked damage dealer with a group that was less optimized for combat. In trying to balance combat for that particular character, the rest of the party could have easily been slaughtered. If that character dropped, they were pretty much screwed.

What is Desert of Desolation and what to expect for figures?

Will there be a gnome with a spoon? :)

    Societies and Alignment Detection

Of course, if he's a PC paladin, he probably uses the "Kill em all, let my god sort em out" philosophy.

    Societies and Alignment Detection

Thanks for the clarification, Misdirection did its job by confusing me. That makes Magic Aura a lot more interesting. I was using it only to hide magic items. About the LGs using Detect Evil to kill those that ping evil: I would think those that show up as faint (an evil 1st level commoner)...

    Societies and Alignment Detection

I think the spell allows for you to use a person's aura as the misdirected one? So if you're evil, target one of your minions or even your own evil aura. (Of course, Im probably misreading the use of the word object in the spell description, the Target does say, Person or Object,) (Yes, it...

    Societies and Alignment Detection

Also, Misdirection can be cast on someone else to change thier aura to say....an evil one. So that goody goody paladin causing problems? Cast Misdirection on him and use an evil aura as the replacement aura. Do that before a "Detect Evil" pogrom and he's got troubles.

    Societies and Alignment Detection

Those with a vested interest in doing evil would find ways around being Detected. Just look at the Misdirection spell. Its lasts for hours, is relatively low level, and can easily fool Detect Evil. Detect Evil, like lie detectors, are not infallible, so you can't base an entire law system...

Excerpt from Monte Cook's World of Darkness in Game Trade Magazine

I must be dense but the ad copy didnt make a lot of sense to me. How is it a secret that something is going on? I mean, a city was blown up by a supernatural force. Within a few weeks, 1 million people are acting wierd. Suddenly, people are morphing into werewolves, demons, mages, and...

    An Evil party... Troublesome?

I reread your post, and I agree with you. I was implying the wrong thing from the post. (That's what I get for skimming) In the context of a game, I can still see how a group of evil characters could work together. As to sacrifice for another pc, they would only do it based on the advantage...

    An Evil party... Troublesome?

That's not a guideline, that's a straightjacket. Enforcing evil characters in your game to be like that is making them into cardboard caricatures. I would prefer my bad guys be a little more interesting. Tony Soprano, Al Swearengen, etc. Those I would describe as evil, but they all have some...

    An Evil party... Troublesome?

As far as an evil party's motivations go, just pretend you're playing Shadowrun. Everything they do has a cost or benefit to them. If they won't drive the game with thier own devious plots, just have a crime boss say, "Go whack this tribe of elves, they are causing problems with shipments of...

The highest level character Ive played was a 12th level Gnoll Druid. The highest level Ive ran was a 14th level AU game.

    Farewell, my Friend

Thank you for your excellent work. I will miss the anticipation of going to the mailbox and waiting for each issue to arrive. While I like online content, there's nothing like getting something as excellent as Dungeon in the mail.

    Can a whip flank?

Yeah, I know they suck. But I still like them. I like whips a lot more than spiked chains visually. I came to the same conclusion as The Blow Leprechan. The rogue would get his sneak attack, but would not help anyone else with flanking. That's assuming he can hurt the target, which is rare...

Got a whip wielding rogue. I'm wondering if I can flank using one.

    Building an Endgame Scenario

So last night, while my group discussed an ongoing campaign, we decided to set it up for the ending. At a real world date set by the GM (me), the game will end. In the campaign, the players are trying to gather the clues that will allow them to stop the BBEG's evil plan. They have to do this...
