    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

This implies that being aware can make you worse at searching for someone than when not being aware because you always can roll subaverage.

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

Absolutely agree. The wording is unnecessary complex and I am surprised to see the authors and designers fail so hard. With your phrasing the effect of invisibility on hiding is also clear: It doesnt make you automatically hidden (because you make sounds), but you basically can attempt to do the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

There is no problem. The facing is irrelevant as you say. The moment you step into line of sight you are not hidden anymore. I sometimes do rulings based on facing outside of combat. Like guards that are facing only one direction. In combat I use the rules and rationalize them by assuming a...

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

Oh nice, darkvision makes me invisible now? I am joking, I know what you mean, you can hide in darkness. But that is actually already possible RAW. There is no line of sight in total darkness for creatures without darkvision. Obviously they don't see much themselves - but a creature with...

How Much Do You Care About Novelty?

Mh, in terms of genre and setting I don't expect too much from the games itself, at the end the vibe of the game is largerly dependent on the DM. Even a Forgotten Realms D&D adventure can have a completely different flavor of fantasy depending on the DM running it. In general I prefer more...

"I think Hydrogen is a rare element" and other science facts.

Once again I doubt that most people were pulled out by it. I didn't even remember at all without your comment.

What are you reading in 2025?

Thats really interesting because a lot of people I know who love these books are not really playing TTRPGs at all. I know wonder if people who regularly are playing TTRPGs are not really into these. I havent tried it yet. They are by definition fantasy though. Just not the subsection of Fantasy...

What are you reading in 2025?

Oh I was not talking about blurbs - they are just marketing and often feel like the quoted authors didn't even read the book. I mean more like when authors talk in interviews, blogs, social media etc. about their influences and favorite works - these are the goldmines. Often they reference not...

"I think Hydrogen is a rare element" and other science facts.

I highly doubt most people thought too much about it, my 12 year old self certainly did not in the cinema. I mean plausible enough for a cool action or cool setting. But maybe plausible is the wrong term. James Wood described it in his famous slating review of "White Teeth" by Zadie Smith...

D&D 5E (2014) Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

Funny, I am in a similar situation - currently in the last level of the final dungeon after 3 years of playing - but I am way less fond of the campaign. The hexcrawl was fun in the beginning but we basically stumpled upon the right track to Omu and in general there was not a lot to discover. Omu...

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

I like them if they are a) NOT cutscenes (no action happens, no assumptions about PCs actions and decisions included) b) include descriptions for all important scene elements b) are brief, but evocative. Unfortunately most official 5e adventures fail at these criteria, so I rarely use them. In...

"I think Hydrogen is a rare element" and other science facts.

It is very fun to read these anecdotals in the thread, however in my games I use the best physics in the world: Cinematic physics aka. if it would seem plausible in a blockbuster movie, it is possible in my game. It certainly is not realistic physics simulation, but who needs that in their game.

What are you reading in 2025?

Thats a big one. Authors have good taste in books - which make sense - and when you find out what the authors you like like for themselves you often hit a gold mine.

The Naked Gun | Official Teaser Trailer (2025 Movie)

Thats a good point. In 20 years we will talk about these movies, not the weird naked gun reboot.

What's The Next Big Pop Cultural Push?

Warfriendly stories (as in not superheros fight for peace but normal people happily die for their cause - which is their country either plainly or as hidden message) and fear of AI and robots are in my bucket list.

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else dislike the "keyword" style language of 5.24?

You are right with that, but isnt that the point of rules? To not get lost in immersive text about a breathing fantasy world, but codified rulesystem? The rest is in fluff texts and boxed texts and should be seperated. After all its a reference book, not a fantasy novel. I have to say though...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Thats just not true. I could think of tons of things that a new D&D edition could introduce where there would be not a big following just because its shiny and new. And it did already happen - 4e. Yes, new editions come out to sell to new audiences and resell to old audiences. Thats...

What if Studio Ghibli directed Lord of the Rings?

These "AI turns everything into Ghibli" hype at the moment is really weird. On the one hand its fun to see, on the other hand it feels wrong. Because its only the artstyle - everything else is clearly NOT Ghibli (directing mainly, but also music etc.) which leads to an uncanny valley effect for...

IS Your GM Out To Get You (Serious)

I only had a mildly annoying version of antagonistic DM. They were not very rules savy and always decided for rulings that were disadvantagous to the players. Not like out to get us and kill us, but always annoying because I knew my character would've done better if we would've played RAW. Also...

How Would Your Favorite Game System Handle This?

None of your suggestions. Its just boring for many players because they can only roleplay in one of four scenes and they are on idle for the other 3 scenes. Its like running 4 different games in parallel. If I would run a scenario like this I would try to design a scenario where actions in one...
