What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

Jeah, definitely there are sometimes the exceptions. I had one player who absorbed my lore and always wanted more - which became a bit of a problem, because he knew the lore better than me and noticed my contradictions that came up during play, because honestly I don't care too much about the...

    Immersion?

Immersion is not something that can be discussed in a session zero IMO. Its a very personal and introspective feeling at least in my experience. My most immersive experiences are when I am alone or when the others are silent and immersed themselves (like in a movie theatre). TTRPG is quite...

What are you reading in 2025?

I read "In the miso soup" by Ryu Murakami and this book is ... something. Way more gorey than expected, but only in one specific scene. Felt a bit like a sudden Tarantino outburst of violence, but with detailed gore description and definitely cruel details. And besides that it is a cynic...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

In my experience, lore only matters for players, if it becomes relevant to their decision making during playing the game. Anything else is fluff that rarely becomes of any relevant meaning to the players.

    Immersion?

Immersion is a sensory feeling for me. To be immersed in a movie I sit in the cinema, not talking with anybody, just be in the story. An immersive game is for me a video game with detailed graphics and good music and sound. Immersion in TTRPG is unnecessary and not the reason I play RPGs. I...

    Player skill vs character skill?

I think its not a VERSUS. Sometimes you need or want player skill, sometimes character skill. For me personally TTRPG is about making decisions and problem solving. These are the main areas that I don't want to automate or abstract away behind skill checks, because these are the fun of the game...

First foray into paid DMing - 16 session in.

First of all, I really enjoy reading these posts. Before I become an active member of enworld I was a lot in D&D subreddits, and whenever this topic came, so many comments were just "wtf, why are taking money" "you are ruining the hobby" and whatever other nonsense. I also thought about paid...

    Should traps have tells?

Yeah, that explains it, our DM was always quite true to the book.

Eberron: Forge of the Artificer - First Impressions

Thank god! Thats one of the main appeals of Eberron, the lore doesn't grow to an abomination like FR. And it was a design, so a weird criticsm to hold up against one feature that was always there. I think the mechanical updates and small expansion is perfectly fine, especially for that price, I...

    Should traps have tells?

Thats interesting because I hated the traps in ToA and many of them did not fall under the three points you make in your post :D. We had multiple character deaths due to traps without tells hidden behind a roll. Maybe our DM naughty word it up I don't know. I only know the adventure from a player...

What are you reading in 2025?

Love angry rants like that! Yes, this is what I loved so much about the book too. Multiple times I was so sure I know what was about to happen, just to have the rug pulled under me. Its a play with expectations, but not in a bad "GOT season 8" way.

What are you reading in 2025?

I finished it yesterday evening. I enjoyed the last third a bit less than the rest. I thought the ending was a bit underwhelming, lot of handwaving and in the end I was left with ... a shrug? Rand think its finished, but clearly its not really, but we as a reader are left out of how much danger...

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

Can you expand on that or maybe describe an example? I do not precisely understand the difference you desribe here between drawing a make based on what makes sense vs what supports gameplay. Because the old school maps you describe they DONT make sense, at least thats how I understand you...

What are you reading in 2025?

Thats too bad, the journey aspect is so fun to me. Although I am surprised that the first book already introduces a "fast travel". I am always a bit annoyed when these system get introduced in novels, it feels a bit gamey. Although I thought that "the ways" were implemented in a cool way, they...

Time travel doesn't exist because time travel wiped out the timelines where it did

Proving in a scientific way, yes it is difficult. But I was just responding through the premise of the thread - I think its much more reasonable that back wards time travel is impossible as an explanation for missing time travelers than they explanation they destroyed every timeline where its...

What are you reading in 2025?

Really interesting snippet and I think I can see hints of these already in the first book. I am right now in the Caemlyn chapters of the first book, and I really hope this "Ta'veren" concept gets explored further, because right now it just seems to be a plot device to explain how all these...

Time travel doesn't exist because time travel wiped out the timelines where it did

I thought the simple answer is that time travel backwards isn't really possible. Not just in our timeline, but in general.

    Do you observe Thanksgiving?

I am European, so no I don't observe Thanksgiving, definitely not the American holiday. There are though of course European Thanksgiving tradition which don't anything have to do with pioneers of America and genocide of Native Americans, but just... thanking for the "giving" aka the harvest. But...

What are you reading in 2025?

I've just recently rewatched the prequel trilogy and The Phantom Menace was even worse than I remembered. Are you sure about that comparison? Ep I doesn't even have a real plot, things just happen in a weird unconnected way and you always wonder: who is supposed to be the main character? Its...

Project Hail Mary | Official Trailer 2

I loved the book and I am very curious how they will do it. Ryan Gosling is a great cast for the role IMO.
