D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

Personally, I think a better question to ask is why do we want to depict the mentality of non-human species as significantly different from that of humans? There are many possible answers to that question, and they all point to different ways one ought to depict those species in order to achieve...

Taylor Navarro Joins Wizards of the Coast as D&D Designer

To be fair with the Hellfire Club thing, that logo is just excellent design and branding, and is also directly connected to what is widely agreed to have been the single best thing about Season 4.

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

The carcination phenomenon (animals convergently evolving crablike body plans) is a bit overstated in pop science media. Like, it’s definitely a thing, but mostly among animals that aren’t too distantly related to crabs and face similar environmental pressures. There are a lot of similar...

It was also a time when a lot of brands were trying to reinvent themselves. Something was in the air between the turn of the millennium and the emerging financial crisis, and a lot of popular brands attempted big reboots that didn’t end up working out for them. The exact same thing happened with...

There is very little D&D actually played on-screen in Stranger Things, so I doubt it really set up much in the way of expectations for people who it brought to the hobby. I know a lot of people who got into D&D because of Critical Role, but all of them are adults, and all of them have been...

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

Most stories are written by humans, and accordingly most stories are fundamentally about the human experience. Sometimes we explore that experience though contrast with something we imagine to be a non-human experience; sometimes we explore it through analogy to non-humans who seem to display...

Dungeons & Dragons Playtests Four New Mystic-Themed Subclasses

amusingly, circles are square-shaped in 5e, due to the way they handle diagonals on a grid.

I mean, I think getting new blood onboard is kind of the point.

Homebrew 5E Artificer Spellcasting Houserule Idea

Early in the D&D Next playtest, Wizards did the classic “prepare each spell individually” Vancian casting, while the new-school “prepare a spell once and you can cast it as many times as you have spell slots to cast it with” pseudo-Vancian was used by Clerics and Druids, and I think Paladins and...

D&D General + Homebrew Brainstorm to bring back prepared Vancian Casting +

I quite like roll to cast, but I wouldn’t lump it in with individual spell prep Vancian. It’s more akin to 5e-style, because preparing a spell once allows you to cast it any number of times until you fail a roll. I find it to be much more appealing than classic individual prep Vancian, but I...

I try not to assume, but as assumptions go that seems like a pretty reasonable one.

A lot of new hires recently. I don’t care to speculate about what if anything that might mean, but it is exciting.

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

I actually agree with you about all of this. Calling mixed species “half-whatever,” and assuming the other half is always human, as well as privileging human/elf and human/orc combinations over other mixes has always been dumb, and I’m sure are why they got cut from the PHB. But, mixed-“species”...

D&D General Are creatures of the Ethereal Plane the Elemental creature type?

I understand your point, but with goblins specifically, them being fey makes sense and aligns with the folklore they’re derived from.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tidbit for monster design

Oh! In that case, I have another guess what the problem might be. Blights have False Appearance. The most likely reason they aren’t lining up with your equation is that WotC assumed they would get a surprise round, so that’s messing up the functional damage output portion of the equation. Try...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tidbit for monster design

My best guess would be that those 61 are intended to be “solo” monsters. Legendaries, dragons, and other monsters the designers expected to most often be used as bosses. Does that jibe with the 61 you observed to have the higher hit chance?

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

Let me give you all a personal first-hand example. I’m 1/4 Pueto-Rican, but my grandmother assimilated so hard, I basically had no idea of my connection to that side of my heritage. I call her “Abby” despite her name being Mildred, because it’a short for Abuela, and as a kid I just accepted that...

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

The 2nd, 3rd, or later generation mixed experience is not the same as the 1st generation mixed experience, but both are mixed experiences, and valuable for the game to be able to represent.
