Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

I checked it. I was wrong; it's 1 minute/level. I probably Persisted it at the time or something. Edit: 1 hour/level was probably a hold-over from 3.0 on my part.

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

I don't think anyone on this board doesn't think that the Abjurant Champion is "too good". Every other warrior-mage prestige class however gives up something. In the case of the EK, as I pointed out earlier, you're losing out on two levels of spellcasting at the very least. Or will you now...

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

Well it depends on your school of thought: 1) Polymorph is broken. Obviously, Draconic Polymorph will be doubly so. 2) Polymorph isn't broken. Well Draconic Polymorph is just extending that a bit. Or you could always still stick to plain 'ol Polymorph and instead of Str 60 you settle for Str...

    I HATE the term GISH

Ah, but in the thread you started, some of the posters were confusing Warrior-Mage with Mage. And it's honestly less arduous to type gish rather than warrior-mage (the - or / is hard to reach).

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

Also, if I wanted to crunch the numbers, I'd cast the following: Draconic Polymorph (Draconomicon) into a Firbolg (MM2): Firbolg has base Str 36 and with Draconic Polymorph's +8 Str, that brings us to Str 44. This lasts hour/level minute/level. First round of combat, I'll cast Bite of the...

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

Wraithstrike. Polymorph/Metamorphosis (although there is a Psionic Tattoo that bestows this ability 1/day). Draconic Polymorph (+8 Str, +2 Con) Bite of the Werebear (+16 Str, +8 Con) Superior Invisibility Arcane Strike (not really a spell) Greater Mighty Wallop (turn that 1d12 Greathammer...

1st Level Wizard - What Spells Do You Take?

I'd also like to add that while Sleep is generally a useful spell at low-levels, it's casting time is 1 round. Shocking Grasp also has the quickest pay-off although that also means you're getting into melee range. Color Spray has a nice cone effect that at the very least stalls your opponents.

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

I've played an actual Eldritch Knight (along with a variety of other warrior-mage classes on both sides of the table). I don't find the role of the Eldritch Knight problematic because I know exactly what his role is. The problem with warrior-mage classes is that some people focus on the mage...

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

Not with EK but I did with the Phantom Knight from Five Nations (Eberron), which is a buffer EK but with harsher requirements. I'd also like to point out that the Stalwart Sorcerer is similar to the Battle Sorcerer variant from Unearthed Arcana minus the base attack increase and the loss of af...

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

That was probably the wiser course of action. Because that's a simple oversimplification. Eldritch Knights aren't simply Fighter/Wizard gestalts any more that the Hexblade or Duskblade is a gestalt of Fighter/Wizard. Mathematically speaking, here's what you get with a Fighter Wizard gestalt...

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

Honestly, I stopped following that. It's simply prone to abuse, especially at the hands of high HD monsters. It's about as flawed as increasing a monster's HD 4 times and it only acquiring +1 CR. It's a good guide, mind you, but if taken too literally (and without GM discretion), there's an...

Andy Collins: "Most Magic Items in D&D Are Awful"

And I assume a CRPG is good at bartering, haggling, intimidating (and perhaps stealing from) magic item vendors? If you don't want magic item Wal-Mart, that's fine. For other gamers, that's where they get their kicks. But even the "magic shop" experience can be a role-playing encounter. Heck in...

    Abjurant Champions

By RAW, you have two options: Ectoplasmic Armor - Spell Compedium - 1st level - armor bonus that's only effective against incorporeal touch attacks - +5 at 1st-level, +9 at 16th-level in addition to any Abjurant Champion bonuses. Luminous Armor/Greater Luminous Armor - Book of Exalted Deeds...

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

I did but it doesn't seem anyone noticed it, along with my suggestion of the Dragonslayer from Draconomicon. It's honestly fine in the sense that it's not broken but the only other reason aside from flavor to take it is to acquire a high DC when it comes to spell saving throws. There's also...

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

There is the d8 hit points (which is more than what the EK gives you) and Arcane Fist/Hold Ray for the same reasons you want Channel Spell from the Spellsword. Overall a more competent unarmored, unarmed monk-type character. The penalties to hit requires an investment in Arcane Strike but...

Andy Collins: "Most Magic Items in D&D Are Awful"

Not all the time. You could be mercenaries or you could be "hired explorers" sent to excavate/scout a dungeon. Altruism is fine. But not all adventures necessarily start out altruistic.
