    Explain INT and Reflex, Please

Dexterity = your unconscious reflexes kicking in to save you. Intelligence = your conscious decision/plan to avoid blows. In 3.x, creatures without Dexterity scores (i.e. Plants) use Int in place of Dexterity.

Forked Thread: My first 4E game...

It's also kinda hard to play the "Defender" role when you're far off in the distance...

Forked Thread: Rate WotC as a company: 4e Complete?

It's mentioned somewhere (sorry, no link) that they wanted to include the Warlord and Warlock because it adds something new to the base classes, just as the Sorcerer added something new to 3.0 when it first came out. It's a conscious decision, yes, but hardly what I'd call a straight-out ploy...

Forked Thread: Rate WotC as a company: 4e Complete?

As a GM, I do feel that the MM list is short. However, I also felt the same way about the 3.5 MM as well. Also, 4E has to make encounters for 30 levels instead of 20 levels.

Forked Thread: Rate WotC as a company: 4e Complete?

If WotC could sell us three 600-page books at $70.00 each, I'm sure they probably would. But as it is, there's only so many pages you can include in a book without raising its price point, or allot development/playtesting time for various races/classes. As it is, 4E is no different than 3E...

    DM Screen errata up!

Printing and distributing takes time, especially in the quantities WotC orders them. I'd say it takes more than two weeks and I wouldn't be surprised if the actual DM Screens are now now in the WotC Warehouses being packaged and readied for shipment. (Remember, the hardcopy PHB was available as...

Forked Thread: Rate WotC as a company: 4e Complete?

I don't think they really emphasized that. I mean 3.xx had numerous Monster Manuals as well as the PHB II and DMG II. In many ways, some of the splat books were more essential than the PHB II and DMG II. 3.0 had little Prestige Classes to begin with and 3.5 doesn't give you a Prestige Class...

Forked Thread: Rate WotC as a company: 4e Complete?

Oh no! The cynic and optimist are agreeing (again)! But right now, I do think the game is complete and playable. It just doesn't look "complete" compared to the splatbooks released under the previous version. As for the business structure, it's not any different than the other companies (i.e...

If you don't like minions - how would you do it?

In 3.5, I'd make them a Swarm. I guess nothing's stopping you from converting them into a Swarm in 4E as well. That "one creature" you're attacking now? That's really four people occupying one square, trying to gang up on you. (HP could be Con + HP/level appropriate for its role; then for...

    "Shinies!" "Didn't we ban kender?"

If your players have Internet access, maybe session 0 can be done over a message board or mailing list over a week or two. You throw one idea, read the various responses, and move on from there. Think of it as the company memo.

    Cost of Core Books PDFs

From http://www.gamespy.com/articles/885/885692p6.html Would it be possible for people to automatically get licenses for online features of D&D books and supplements that they've purchased in physical form? Andy Collins: We're not able to link purchase of a specific product to ownership of...

    Cost of Core Books PDFs

Why XML in particular? For me, PDF is the way to go. If it was as novel or a short story, sure, the optimum format might have been .RTF or .DOC. But RPG books are complex things. You have tables. And artwork. PDFs at least have usable search functions and bookmarks. And at this point in time...

Do people enjoy reading campaign blogs?

Let me put it this way: some people are great storytellers while others aren't. Similarly, others are great are reporting and writing their adventure while others aren't. So I guess it all comes down to whose blog am I reading. I've read campaign blogs that don't interest me and some that do...

    2008/7/10 Tabletop RPG Podcasts

They're actually on my list. They just didn't release a new episode this week (see last week's list). Like you, some of what they say doesn't sit well with me (but not the min-maxing part) but at least they're candid with their ideas and opinions.

    "Shinies!" "Didn't we ban kender?"

A lot of podcasts actually talk about this as well. You can call it your "Session 0" where you have your pre-game talk. Pre-game talk might include what characters each one is going to play, setting expectations for everyone involved ("this is going to be a dungeon crawl", "this is going to be a...

    D&D 4E 4E without Magic Items

It's been said by the designers in an article on the WotC site that the game assumes you have a magic weapon, magic armor, and an item that increases the other defenses. Strumbleduck's chart is right (I'd probably give the bonuses at 3rd level and every 5 levels thereafter). Just be sure to also...
