Just a personal note: I’ve found through trial and error that the only things necessary to prepare are those that affect how the characters in the player's immediate social circle are roleplayed. However, campaigns are supposed to be fun for the referee, so if making King Lists brings you joy...

When it comes to creativity and system design, the personal perspective always matters. Many folks in this thread do not get that and insist on doing analysis, critiques, and criticism as if there is an absolute scale of agency. The part I highlighted in bold highlights the fallacy you are...

For me, when I speak of agency, I distinguish between what a player can do as their character and what they can do as a participant in the campaign. The dividing line for me is this: could a character within the setting plausibly take this action? If yes, it’s in-character (e.g., fight a guard...

Despite being over 100,000 words, my Northern Marches manuscript for my upcoming Majestic Fantasy Realms Kickstarter barely scratches the surface of what an adventuring party could be sticking their noses into. Just this little area in the campaign I been running in the MFR Five Mile Hexes...

Sure. First off, assume we're talking about my Majestic Wilderlands. Next, realize that while I wrote a book on one aspect of what I do, I didn't cover everything, and I could talk for hours on this stuff. So if it doesn't seem like I covered something, ask questions. First, While "opening a...

It may surprise you that, as a player, I also immerse myself deeply in my characters. I played and ran Boffer LARP events for 15 years and even owned a chapter for a time. While I enjoy tabletop roleplaying and immersing myself in-character, it's not as satisfying for me as roleplaying in a...

I am going through your post line by line. It overstates the case and flattens important distinctions that matter in practice. "Right, this is quite incisive." You’re aligning with @thefutilist here, no issue, just setting the tone that you find their critique meaningful. "It's the key...
