D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

And it was still a stupid and arbitrary rule that no other class (well except Monk and assassin in a way) did. If there was no openings, you had to either fight or politic your way though the teen levels. It was utter bollocks. I guess they could fight a wraith or vampire and then lose their...

D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

I think it's kinda funny that people get worked up about clerics, paladins and warlocks breaking their oaths. Where is the desire for druids to fight other druids to gain levels? For monks to remain poor and donate all but a fraction of their treasure to worthy causes? For rangers to be good...

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

    That's 2e minus a dedicated class.

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

I think the problem (as you are painfully aware) is that D&D players no longer want the same things. I would have loved three different psionics methods to rank and vote over, but we were given the mystic and told to quibble over the details, which meant people nitpicked it to death. Some liked...

D&D General The Revised Monster Manual was released 1 year ago today! How have you liked facing down and using the new monsters?

Both are very different than the base standard version. Dalamar and Drizzt are almost nothing alike in terms of species, save for being elves. Mystara is missing a lot of AD&Disms due to being the Basic world for so long. My point is that a generic "Drow Priestess of Lolth" statblock in the...

D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

Right. Make house rules that allow you strip clerics of their class if they swear on Sunday. The core books don't need such things.

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

I liked baby purple dragon rider. A heckuva lot more than the banneret. And maybe if the Lore Police hadn't nuked the survey, we'd have gotten them instead of the wannabe warlord that barely holds it's own weight.

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

These are the same people who gave us Purple Dragon Knight... Though honestly, I kinda agree. WotC has been too deferential since 5e to a community who doesn't know what they want. I kinda think brute forcing "this is what psionics is in 5e" is as valid a tactic as a dozen surveys. It's not...

D&D General The Revised Monster Manual was released 1 year ago today! How have you liked facing down and using the new monsters?

Ackahullay... Drow don't exist in Dragonlance, Dark Sun or Mystara. They are very different in Eberron. Orcs don't exist in Dragonlance, Dark Sun and until recently, Ravenloft. Duergar have no known existence on Mystara, Dark Sun, and I don't think Dragonlance. But the reason they were moved...

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

Exactly. No matter what psionics system WotC would give us, there would be enough people who says it's not "psionicky enough" for them. It doesn't match their favorite interpretation of psionics, or even it shouldn't be a thing at all. The spellcaster psion is the path of least resistance: the...

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

I appreciate the fact that Somatic components give at least one check on their use. You can't use them while restrained/grappled (except for those who have no S and thus no components) and the costly stuff does include some rather important stuff a caster needs. I look at it the same way the...

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

I think you are deeply underselling the divide in the community. Ask 20 D&D players what a druid is and you''ll get 24 answers, ranging from two separate classes (nature priest and shape shifter) to not a class at all (some variant of cleric/generic priest). People don't broadly agree on even...

D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

How does a sorcerer lose his powers? A barbarian? A bard? A monk? You want to saddle classes with an off-switch to their power, saddle ALL of them with an off switch.

The only other exception is costly material components, which makes sense from a balance perspective.

D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

Back in the TSR days, they released CDs with character audio of the "characters" talking to one another. They lacked names, so the characters would call each other by their classes ("Warrior! Look out!" "I have a rope for you, Thief!" "Give that scroll to the Wizard.") Whenever people talk about...

    D&D General Rules that weren't...

We did try it in 2e. Declare, roll, modify. Wasn't a fan. To many times spellcasters lost their turn due to their targets no longer being viable.
