D&D General D&D Evolutions You Like and Dislike [+]

I legitimately wonder how many DMs actually take into account their players preferences when designing their campaign or world. For example, if a player likes furry species, would you provide a anthropomorphic option for them or do you adamantly keep to just the Tolkien style species? If a...

D&D General D&D Evolutions You Like and Dislike [+]

He never outgrew the "sure, you can play X" and then a few weeks later saying "on second thought, I don't like X. Change your character." Which is frankly bull pucky unless the character is disruptive or broken. You deciding you don't like the idea of a druid, or a bard with 8th level spells, or...

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

Meh. I'll wait for WotC to hire a "real elf" to write "The Real Complete Book of Elves"

We were teens and he admitted when he did grow up that was the wrong way of handling it. But he never did outgrow the idea that if he didn't like the vibes of your character, he would make you change them. (He was just more honest about it).

We are discussing the notion that a character can be vetoed because a player (including the DM) doesn't like them. No in setting reason, just "I think sorcerers are so offensive that I won't play a game which has one."

The DM who I routinely comment on here had a nasty habit of deciding he didn't like specific things after he already okayed them. Not because they were too powerful or game breaking, but because on further reflection he didn't like the idea of it. Early on, in 2e, he decided he didn't like...

D&D 5E (2024) Exploring Eberron 2024 -- Gnolls and other gnew character options

The 2014 version was they did fire damage instead of radiants with their revelation and got a fire cantrip instead of light. They may have gotten fire resistance instead of radiant/necrotic, I don't recall.

D&D 5E (2024) Exploring Eberron 2024 -- Gnolls and other gnew character options

That is because this isn't official WotC. This is Keith Baker's 3pp company who made this using DMsGuild and just got it added to Beyond as partner content. So what Keith did was present alternatives to the goblinoids from MotM, not replacements. WotC design had no hand in this.

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

The fact my local game store (biggest in the area) doesn't carry any of those except Daggerheart but has a whole wall of D&D stuff anecdotally disputes that. Certainly not enough to disrupt production.

I guess the question assumes a certain level of caveat then: Is the option balanced? Is it in line with the assumptions of rest of the party or is it clearly OP? I would not want to do a superhero RPG where everyone else is street level (Punisher, Daredevil, Iron Fist) and one player is...

Don't you take notes during play? Or do you design a 320 page setting Bible first?

Well... As long as the player isn't doing it for griefing purposes, (ie to specifically screw with the PC paladin) the why should I care? I'm not playing it and I'm the player has as much right to play what they want as I do. The only time I can see an issue is when a player chooses an option...

Such as? I mean, is it affecting my character? I don't know how the DM adding new classes, species or monsters or whatever directly affects me. If he's adding a new rule (such as critical fumbles) that might warrant a discussion, but that's more a rule change than an addition. You're going to...

WotC D&D Beyond Reveals 'Partnered Content' Schedule

Yeah, you paid 50% of your royalties for access to use wizards IP and access to rules not in the SRD. If you don't care about either of those things, the DM guild isn't worth as much. For a product like Exploring Eberron, it's vital. If you're making your own setting and don't care about having...

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

Right. They are humans in lion suits. Or car suits. But the point is that we don't need a human or half-human pov to understand them. Remember the Michael Bay Transformer movies? (If you don't I envy you). Bay put a half-dozen human characters in there as pov characters because the studio...

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

Simmer down. All I'm saying is that you may want some deeper exploration of what non-human life would be like, and someone else wants a pretty elf hat. Neither way is wrong.

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

The issue of course is that since we're all just guessing, everyone puts different amounts of effort and uses different metrics to measure it. Maybe I play my elf like a bored immortal seeking even the smallest sliver of new experience to interest him. Maybe I play the artist devoting centuries...

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

They've always been humans in hats. The fact the hats were more elaborate than a Royal Wedding guest's doesn't change that. Humans in hats is all we can do. In Star Trek, in D&D, in any speculative fiction. Some people just demand everyone where the same style of hat.
