    How to TPK

I've been reading the thread about avoiding encounters that are too easy or that result in a Total Party Kill (TPK), and I just gave some XP for a poster pointing out that horror games are supposed to end in TPK. So now I'm wondering about the middle ground: when a TPK is expected to happen in...

I was shocked at the actual number of books reviewed!

    Best Christmas films

Krampus. /thread In a weird twist, an actual Christmas movie featured a German character explaining how Die Hard is actually a horror movie, and Hans Gruber was a Robin Hood-type character, terrorized by John McClane.

D&D General New Critical Role Method for Leveling

In a profit-oriented D&D production, this is a lovely idea. In your home game with Steve doing every munchkin thing possible, it amounts to right now being the most narratively satisfying moment to do it. And I'm not sure I'd want to tell the players they can level up whenever they want...

Friends, Gamers, Editors, Lend Me Your Ears! (New Rules)

OP has updated spoiler sections. Here's the new magic example. It deserves a dedicated example, given that magic is where all five modules come together, making it the most complicated module to use.

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

Almost got Green Ronin's a Song of Ice and Fire from Half Price Books. I didn't because it wasn't half MSRP. Oh, and I bought a $7 pain au chocolat while at a pre-session. The pain was horrible!

D&D General Stealing Death Moves from Daggerheart for 5e

I think Matt Mercer's part rolled from one side of his head to the other when you said you'd steal from Daggerheart to add to D&D. But yeah, death moves are a good idea. I've been using them for years now.

D&D General Friday Nonsense: Add One Stat To D&D (For PCs)

Edition Resistance: check this stat to see if any of your other stats are affected by WotC money- or IP-grabs. Alright alright alright . . . D&D really needs a Defense Proficiency, which is what you add to your roll to parry/avoid an attack.

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Uh, yeah. It's called capitalism. Well, more specifically, the big-corporate-ownership part. Besides, it was a way for them to stay away from rule changes while still making a new edition. Tough call. I can't seem to think of any other games based on 5e/6e, off the top of my head . . .

I'll say! Sounds like Matthew McConaughey's work is complete too.

A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE | Official Teaser | Netflix

Finished it. And I'm recommending it, provided: There's a certain US city you don't like. You don't expect it to be a series, like I did for some dumb reason. (Wow this pilot episode is long!) You're okay with French movies (ones that don't really have a plot).

    The "math" of RPGs

Ah. The argument I was referencing suggested that TPKs happen more often. Which was incorrect. Happening more or more often are two different things. Average roll of a d20 is 10.5. Chance of any one result: 5%. The d20 gets called "swingy" because of that 5%. Odds of rolling a sum of 10...

    The "math" of RPGs

But that's not how statistics work. The more you roll the dice is the more they average out. If the DM just gets more and more killer rolls because she's had more encounters, it means she's using loaded dice. The DM has way more levers than that. No. If they all miss in the first round...

    The "math" of RPGs

So, I'm probably going to look at this through the lens of the OP, in which . . . . . . der_kluge suggests that making fun and engaging encounters is impossibly hard. This hasn't been my experience, so I know that not all RPGs need to be providing mechanisms that counteract their own combat...

    The "math" of RPGs

I don't think that TPK/TEC (too easy combat) can both "happen so much" and do so in "low rounds of combat." Dice can look less than random over a small set of rolls. But if it's happening a lot, that's no longer a small set. My guess is human error starts creeping in at that range. This is...

[Old school] I can't deal with inventory

Huh. I may have missed that while learning to walk 🤓 It's all about tradeoffs. Full backpacks mean lots of clanking and an action/round lost to dropping said backpack at the start of a fight. Sure you could tie your gear down to reduce noise, but then it's not readily accessible. What if...
