What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

A couple years ago I played a 9 month campaign of Twilight: 2000 (the current edition from Free League). Had a lot of fun. Really like the system, which somehow manages to be relatively rules light while modeling a gritty vibe where inventory and base management matter. Quite the unicorn. I...

James Ohlen Shifts From Archetype Entertainment Head to Creative Consultant for Tabletop RPGs at Wizards

...yeah. Something here doesn't add up. When you create a new game IP from scratch you presumably want to sequel it. So why bail just as the first game is coming out? Typically it's because there's something happening at the corporate level you can't stomach.

D&D General You Were Rolling Up a New Character, and Just Rolled a 3. What Is Your Reaction?

That 3 is going straight into Wisdom. Foolhardy, oblivious adventurers = great adventures.

James Ohlen Shifts From Archetype Entertainment Head to Creative Consultant for Tabletop RPGs at Wizards

I've worked in the video game industry for almost 20 years. I have no idea what's going on here. But it's safe to assume the press release is not telling the full story. Here is one possibility: Ohlen has a CRPG pedigree and a clear love for D&D. I wouldn't be surprised if an exec at WotC...

Justice Ramin Arman Promoted to Game Design Director of Dungeons & Dragons

I find Pathfinder to be a bit over the top with sexy devils and grossout demons.

D&D 5E (2014) What is your favorite encounter site or dungeon from an official module?

I agree those are all excellent adventures. However, I think there are many very, very good official adventures for 5E. The problem with most of them is structural. If you tweak the story logic, you've often got a great premise, lovely maps, and interesting encounters.

D&D 5E (2014) What is your favorite encounter site or dungeon from an official module?

Ythryn does seem cool. Hope to play it one day.

D&D 5E (2014) What is your favorite encounter site or dungeon from an official module?

I really like all of the giant lairs from Storm King's Thunder, but Grudd Haug stands out to me. I've run it as a DM and played it as a player. Lots of fun both times. Oooh, and Ironslag, the fire giant lair. It's got a rotating bucket system that will take you all around the map if you jump...

D&D General About to run Storm King's Thunder; Any tips ?

Storm King's Thunder can be a great adventure, with some work. I ran a 1-20 level campaign that mashed up Lost Mine of Phandelver, Tyranny of Dragons, and Storm King's Thunder. Sort of. I changed just about everything. But those campaigns were my primary inspiration. If I had another group of...

Fantastic example. I love this. Thank you.

D&D General D&D Dungeon Map Design: Good and Bad

I take your point. But choke points are fairly common, big rooms are not. I'd prefer to see that flipped.

D&D General D&D Dungeon Map Design: Good and Bad

I cannot emphasize this enough: Maps are too dang small! In my group, I have 5 players. Sometimes they have allies, henchmen, pets, etc. They almost always face off against an equal or greater number of foes. Therefore, a typical combat has 12-15 creatures. A climactic set piece could have...

D&D General Which Campaign or Adventure Would You Adapt To Prestige Television?

I have actually thought about this in sufficient detail to outline a series. My pitch is simple: Undermountain. Most fantasy stories focus on epic quests where the fate of the world hangs in the balance. In this show, we instead focus on working-class adventurers. They don't go into...

Traveller 5e coming from World's Largest RPG in cooperation with Mongoose Publishing

I for one am intrigued. I dig D&D 5E and sci fi, so this sounds like chocolate and peanut to me.

    TTRPG Resolutions For 2026

My resolution is just to keep on keeping on. In 2026, I expect to... Complete my 13th Age campaign (it's likely going to take 2 1/2 years and 75 sessions) Start a D&D 2024 campaign set in the Dalelands There's a ton more I'd like to do, but right now my life only has room for one campaign at a...

D&D General Maps, Maps, Maps! Dungeons, Ruins, Caverns, Temples, and more... aka Where Dyson Dumps His Maps.

Wow. I've been watching these maps come together over the months (years?) and they never resonated with me. But now, here, seeing how all the pieces fit? Amazing work. I'm inspired to run a megadungeon campaign set here. Thank you for this and all of your contributions to the hobby.

    D&D 5E (2024) The Dalelands & Myth Drannor : Are they inseparable ?

The appeal of the Dales is that it's classic D&D: Small villages on the edge of the wilderness threatened by evil forces on all sides. Hard to go wrong with that formula. Myth Drannor is entirely optional. My next campaign will be set in the Dales. The climax is likely to be in Myth Drannor...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

We've taken a 2 month break from our 13th Age campaign due to my schedule. However, in my absence, the group played Delta Green. I dropped back in for the final two sessions, just in time for my character to blow up himself along with a score of Dagon cultists. Good times were had by all.
