Dungeons & Dragons Playtests Four New Mystic-Themed Subclasses

That's fair. Investment of the Chain Master was already a bit of a hard sell; at the same time, the Pact options should be appealing beyond simply everyone taking Pact of the Blade, an I don't think this does that. I am rethinking this, as I see the level 3 ability can key off an Ally's spell...

Dungeons & Dragons Playtests Four New Mystic-Themed Subclasses

What I'd really like to see is in a Mystic subclass is a re-worked Horizon Walker (Ranger) -- someone who can eventually cross the planes without being dependent on DM-positioned portals. Find a way to let them cast Plane Shift 1/long rest as a ritual at level 11 with no Material component (yes...

Dungeons & Dragons Playtests Four New Mystic-Themed Subclasses

As someone less invested in preserving old lore, I am thinking about the mechanics and the appeal of the mechanics classes: Warrior of the Mystic Arts (Monk) seems fine: it feels plain, but I think it's an appealing structure that would see a lot of interest. Apart from rewording the level 17...

    D&D 5E (2024) Strategies and Tactics Barbarian (2024)

Primal Knowledge and Backgrounds. While tying the skill bonuses through Primal Knowledge to Strength requires some special pleading to explain, as an ability it is effective but tightly controlled. Your range needs to be active, and all the skills (except perception) would normally take an...

D&D General Short folk appreciation thread – what do you play?

Goblins and then Kobolds. I like the idea of a nuisance species that is presumptively bad, and I like the idea of a single individual rising from that to heroic status. It's a straightforward narrative, and it can play out so many ways, without the need to lean into the comedy. I'll admit that...

(OOC) The Dog Days of Doom

I would always choose the feat with a fun gimmick over a simple +2, at least until level 12.

(OOC) The Dog Days of Doom

I hope it will; no rush for us. We (and I am confident that I speak for us all) are grateful for anyone who takes the time to DM a game. Be well.

    Character connection questions

This is great; and other FATE games (esp. pre-3e) have similar things. In Diaspora, players write 5 phases, including a moment of crisis that changed their character forever, involving the player on their left. The next phase has them looking at the moment made by the person on their right, and...

    D&D 5E (2024) Multiclass Ranger Fix?

There's some dry levels immediately after Ranger 5. 2 in Warlock and/or 2, 3, or 4 in Fighter would be easy picks after Ranger 11 or 12 (or 13 if you find your concentration is continually being broken).

    Best Christmas films

    (2) Alt Christmas film, if you can find it, is Bill Forsyth's Comfort and Joy: Glasgow radio dj gets caught up in a gang war between ice cream companies, at Christmas. (Admittedly, not released at Christmas, but then again every Christmas song you hear was recorded in like May or June. And I...

(OOC) The Dog Days of Doom

Sorry to have been slow in updating my character -- picking a feat was hard! In the end I am going to see how effective Sentinel can be on an otherwise ordinary rogue.

    White Dwarf Reflections #35

This is a great issue. I remember the Star Frontiers ad inside, that said that if you wanted to actually have a playable science fiction role-playing game, you needed to use Star Frontiers (and not, implicitly, Traveller). The people I played traveller with thought that was hilarious.

D&D 5E (2024) Ranger sub-class that make somewhat decent melee?

All of the 2024 PHB options give you something solid enough up to level 11 or so. After that, the benefits tail off. 1. beast master gives you a pet to fight alongside. No real damage boost, but tactical control and fun. 2. Fey wanderer +1d4 once per turn (edit: per target). This is the weakest...

(OOC) The Dog Days of Doom

Hey! Fantastic! I'm very happy for this to keep going. I think the pace you have set is reasonable, but I'd be happy with higher expectations -- if you call for an action, I think everyone should be able to do things in 72 hours. It's so easy for this to drag; if you'd be up for it...

D&D General Dragonmarks in other settings

Simply not true, though you are right that is how many play. RAW (PHB p. 36) is that you choose a background from 2024 and your DM might offer additional options (including legacy options). Similarly, custom backgrounds as presented in the DMG are to be made in collaboration with the DM.

D&D General Dragonmarks in other settings

Ah, so your concern is with Potent Dragonmark, not the starting feats. That's possible. So with a two-feat investment, at level 4, a character can cast a single spell once per short rest of level 1 or 2, and by level 10 it becomes up to a single level 5 spell. Yes, it's effective. To return to...

D&D General Dragonmarks in other settings

This seems a really deeply felt response, and I find it surprising. Which Dragonmarks do you find more powerful than, say, Magic Initiate (Wizard)? Find Familiar, True Strike, and another wizard cantrip, cast with Int, Wis, or Cha, seems to me a high benchmark that (arguably) none of the...
