Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

What do you mean? I'm not allowed to expect more? I'm not allowed to choose who I play with based on whether they make an effort? The difference between 'I roll to attack' and 'I approach him cautiously, and test his defences with a quick strike' is well within the ability of any average person.

Well I designed and published it here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/97631/other-worlds Although it does not have the goal of making situations 'more like the real life' and I don't think that's even possible to achieve.

    Eggses!

Even that doesn't make sense to me. Why does being (allegedly) upside down require a different descriptor? It would be like having 'obtuse sandwiches' being a thing and it's just normal sandwiches placed at a jaunty angle.

    Eggses!

Fried egg Fried egg Fried egg Seriously, these are just the exact same thing described three different ways. I can't tell any difference at all between the three descriptions other than only in the first instance do you crack the egg out of its shell, which I assume to be a mistake. Even...

D&D General When Was it Decided Fighters Should Suck at Everything but Combat?

Good post. I think it also contributes to the excessive optimisation of ability scores. In TSR editions you could have a fighter with a high INT or a high CHA and think OK, here is an additional way I can contribute to the game, a second string to my bow. Now it's more like 'the other classes...

How many times IRL have you felt forced to agree to something that you didn't want to do? How many times in game? How many times IRL have you worried and stressed about an upcoming conversation, or a conversation or meeting you just had? How many times in game? You've hallucinated this...

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

What? Do you not understand that I am the GM in this imagined situation? If players don't have the desire to say anything beyond 'I attack' or 'I roll diplomacy' then I don't have the desire to play with them. Fortunately, no-one I've ever played with has been unable to add something more.

My play group are just my friends. They're all smart, creative people, but then most people in this hobby are. 'Uhh I attack' is learned behaviour.

What? You leaped several stages ahead there. No. I like to play these things out at the table. I just reject the idea that playing it out simulates the real thing in some way. I normally pair the conversation with a dice roll for resolution (or more than one dice roll if it's a complex...

It is not the same. It has zero stakes and zero social or psychological pressure. It is very easy in a roleplayed situation to resist all attempts at persuasion, to agree to a wild course of action, to escalate your efforts until the other side capitulates, to refuse to budge one iota against...

Surely you can chain multiple flips together over a sequence of play. OK the orc runs at you with a vicious serrated blade. [Player describes countermeasures.] Flip a coin to see if you can keep him at bay. OK, he manages to sidestep your blow and get right up to your flank. He has this...

So 14 months after 4e's release there was a roomful of Gen Con attendees who had not only never played 4e, but also didn't know anything about it and hadn't been exposed to any of the pre-release marketing or post-release controversy and discussion on forums and such? They were blank slates who...
