Looks like I'll be the DM, so I read through the Campaign Guide. Love the overall storyline. Looking forward to checking out the first adventure. :)

    Google+?

My girlfriend tried it with us this weekend in her 4E game. We're currently midway through the new Tomb of Horrors super adventure. It was a much better solution that Skype or Oovoo since the multipoint videoconferencing is free, rather than having to pay past 2 with Skype or past 3 with Oovoo...

    Ending a Campaign... How?

If you think about the duration of a campaign, it's likely that while the campaign is running you'll come up with all sorts of great ideas. Some of them will just occur to you; others may be sparked by your players. So you don't necessarily need to have a clear end in mind when you start --...

D&D 4E What's so bad about 4th edition? What's so good about other systems?

Really? How many classes in 4E have an area burst 2 within 20 power like Fireball? This is still a situation where the Wizard dominates, particularly at low levels. I agree that they're less different, but I disagree on how. The AEDU framework is the key point of similarity; there are no ranged...

    D&D 4E Disillusionment from 4E

There's a much wider variety than that. Just as one example, there are powers that grant some benefit to the PC, rather than forcing movement or applying a status condition to the enemy. There are also barbarian rages, warden guardian forms, summoning powers...

    Making the game more fun

I prep all my encounters in Power2ool anyway, so taking a point or two off each MM3 monster's attacks and defences after importing them is pretty easy. :) I take off one point in heroic and two in paragon. I haven't run or played in an epic game.

Zeitgeist isn't normally my favourite style, but it's a style I like, and I thought the Player's Guide was very well done. I'm intrigued enough that I'm following the Zeitgeist releases, and I think I'd enjoy running it or playing in it. Since I don't know which, I'm avoiding the Campaign Guide...

    Making the game more fun

Over the last year or so I've pretty much adopted all three of those, except for free melee training. For the rest of number 3, I actually fix the math behind the screen rather than awarding bonuses and/or bonus feats. That way, my players can build their characters in the CB using inherent...

Using the Disease Track for lasting injuries.

I considered something similar to that, based on the Dragon Age wound system. If you're unconscious and making death saves, then: If you succeed on your first death save but roll less than 15, you awaken with a wound. If you succeed on your second death save but roll less than 16, you awaken...

D&D 4E What's so bad about 4th edition? What's so good about other systems?

Skill challenges are there in part to support DMs who aren't great at managing emergent gameplay. These DMs can just follow the structure and get something reasonable. But I think skill challenges are more useful than just to help out new DMs. I've been DMing for about 15 years, and I'm...

    Dare I ask... Stealth?

Lots of great advice in this thread, I just wanted to clarify a couple of corner cases that have come up for my Rogue|Warlock/Assassin... You actually "retain the benefits of being Hidden," rather than retaining the Hidden condition. Minor quibble. That's definitely the rule, but it's worth...

DDI Character Builder Home Brew Equipment

I don't think you can. But if you give the PC a Magic Sword +1 in the CB, then make a +1 Sword of Fire and Ice in something like Power2ool, the CB character sheet will have the right math and you can just give the player the custom card to replace the generic one after they print out their sheet.

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

I don't agree. Perhaps a better way to term it is that I think 4E.E has been a significant step change in incremental character option incompatibility, combined with implicit marginalization of older options... and that I think this is a problem for the game. Not a huge problem, but something...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

I did so about four pages ago and the point was conceded. The subclasses are plainly not as interoperable as builds generally are, with certain exceptions (e.g. beastmaster). Multiclass/hybrid options are only now available as a playtest, and a number of Essentials subclasses are entirely...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

"The old books still exist" is a bit of a misdirection, IMO. There are plenty of pre-Essentials classes that need more attention -- not errata, but new content. However, now that Essentials is the new norm, pre-Essentials classes aren't likely to get significant new support in a new book. The...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

This thread has moved on from my posts, but I wanted to make a quick note -- the psionic power point classes still follow the encounter power structure. Power points are directly analogous to (and are balanced against) encounter powers. That's actually the route I would have preferred to see...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

Because WotC didn't say that the beastmaster would be "the baseline experience for the game going forward." They didn't marginalize pre-beastmaster Ranger builds in favour of supporting the beastmaster (until community outcry arguably forced them to relent). They didn't shuffle pre-beastmaster...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

I'm pretty sure the argument was that the back of the book states that it's for use with HotFL, HotFK, and RC. I'm with Dice4Hire on that one -- if you aren't the sort of D&D player who follows what WotC says online, how would you know that HoS is compatible with PHB1-3? * I think the big...

Any problems with cunning sneak / shadow walk combo?

I should read the text of Gloaming Cut -- it might be a good fit for my (Rogue|Warlock)/Assassin, a tiefling named Gloom who I built to play sort of like Nightcrawler. I've got cunning sneak + shadow walk, and I've been picking up teleport powers. I've got Shadow Step as an encounter teleport...

Any problems with cunning sneak / shadow walk combo?

As mneme noted, you can't make a stealth check to hide as part of the action in which you lost the hidden status. There are a few powers that explicitly break this rule and allow you to make a stealth check to become hidden after the attack, but unless Gloaming Cut is one of them (and IIRC...
