Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

I prefer core mechanics where the chances of success are relatively easy to estimate for the average player. So I generally favor simpler random number distributions like a flat d20 distribution to more complex ones like 3d6 bell curve for routine and frequent task resolution.

    Olympics 2026 Thread

Or, who skates to musical themes based on a video game about ripping out people's spines? Is there a hidden message? Given their country's relationship with Russia, it's not out of the question.

D&D General Adventure League (AL) still supported?

I'm finding it hard to find anything official out there - that said, they have updated statements/rules for the latest FR and Eberron books, so I don't think it's completely phased out. What I do know is that Gamehole Con started up their own organized play program called Wardens of the Eastern...

D&D General What do you think?

Not gonna lie, there are some flags here to worry about. But some, maybe not. Big enemy numbers and over-leveled NPCs are something you're gonna see with a DM trying to rebalancing things for 6 PCs. Frankly, we do it for fewer PCs than 6 as well since 5e has a history of underestimating PC...

Ugh, same asshats arguing from the same perspectives ruins another thread.

D&D General The Revised Monster Manual was released 1 year ago today! How have you liked facing down and using the new monsters?

I think the 2024 Monster Manual is a bit of a mixed bag, leaning toward overall improvement. Some monsters are definitely better, some (like the lycanthropes) definitely worse. Some are a lateral change that is still kind of weird (like the goblinoids now being fey and thus immune to hold...

Traveller 5e coming from World's Largest RPG in cooperation with Mongoose Publishing

It is, however, always a relevant question with respect to Traveller which has had so many incarnations. Because I can tell you that Traveller 5, the one in the big black tome, is a propeller-headed geek's wet dream of crunchiness.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

Really? I don’t think I’ve encountered it anywhere but in D&D spheres, and that’s in 40-odd years of playing mainly trad role playing games.

    Tagged post returning 404 error

Not just that they are ignoring you, but they have 2-way ignore on as their setting for ignore behavior. This is, I think, the default setting.

    D&D General Rules that weren't...

I suspect they might have done away with delaying to avoid exploits with durations of temporary effects like conditions. But if your players aren't cheesing those things, then I wouldn't expect delaying to cause problems.

Things you don’t like about DMing

I feel fortunate that the group I'm running for currently doesn't seem to have any social referee issues. I've only had to really step in and do that a couple of times in the last 25 or so years. I'm going to echo a lot of people here and say it's the moment before the session starts that's the...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

It might also mean that player is basically playing Winnie the Pooh, a bear of startlingly little brain. Yet he gets along and saves the day... a lot.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

I don't have a problem with mental attributes and using mental attribute terms - as long as they are used for execution of actions when checks are made and not as gatekeepers for playing a certain way.

D&D 5E (2024) Changes to the Command spell and its use at the table.

Misty steps and teleports definitely come to mind as viable options - though ones I could see negotiating away because they're not technically movement even though they do move the target.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

I'm not sure I would be happy with that either because it's the GM deciding whether or not a particular idea/tactic is subject to an Intelligence check (not to mention setting the DC) which is tantamount to policing the role play of the character.

    D&D 5E (2024) Unfreezing the Narrative

The challenge with so many of these ideas is that they encroach on other spells, feats, actions, or abilities that do something similar and therefore devalues them - all because, as a PC, your attack/spell targeting the enemy missed its mark. I understand that people get frustrated when the dice...
