D&D General Have you ever had a Gnoll PC?

Never played or seen another do. I also have to say, I don't even use them often as monsters.

D&D 5E (2024) Changing Three Metamagic during Long Rest Should Stay.

I'd say the problem is rather about the social contract while playing the game, and about the perception people have even before the play. You explained what you enjoy. I enjoy something different: I like RPGs when they make me think AND choose, including at character build and level-up. And...

D&D 5E (2024) Changing Three Metamagic during Long Rest Should Stay.

Yeah and that's why I won't make the switch to 5.5e just like I did not adopt Tasha's book. It's not the way I like to approach the game.

D&D 5E (2024) Changing Three Metamagic during Long Rest Should Stay.

I can only explain my preference. Changing characters abilities during a long rest potentially (a) breaks suspension of disbelief, (b) devalues strategic character design, (c) dilutes diversity and (d) complicates DM's adventures design. (a) breaks suspension of disbelief One day Bob the...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

If I ever had this problem, I would look into some less popular remedies such as: - enforce material components directly: not allow a pouch or focus to cover for any components but instead require the caster to purchase, carry and properly handle them in details (does the Bane spell says one...

    (IC) PLANESCAPE: Intrigue

Grim sees that the lock is finally giving in and whispers as if talking to her mage hand "About time... another failure and you'd have been back to toilet cleaning chores". Then, seeing Izek darting into the dark room, she quickly takes a look around to plan the safest route to follow her...

D&D 5E (2024) IF you're allowing a PC to roll, WHEN does autosuccess matter?

It is possible that the DM has already determined the task is impossible but doesn't want the players to know. So the DM can ask for a roll even if will fail on a natural 20. Unless the player rolls 20, they won't know they are wasting time on an impossible task. If they really roll a natural...

WotC Dungeons & Dragons Adventurer Is A New UK Magazine To Teach D&D

The initiative looks good, but I would want to know if "teaching how to play D&D" is written by someone who is really savvy and sensible, or is it offering only trite advice. It is not easy even for competent DMs to avoid falling into the trap of either teaching your "true way" of playing or...

    (OOC) Planescape: Intrigue

Second attempt at lockpicking in the alley, with advantage... Grim - Lockpicking second attempt (advantage) = 14 & 22

    (OOC) Planescape: Intrigue

Does @Nordom approve the advantage? I think Help on skills requires DM's adjudication based on the situation. Also, do you allow to try again? Neither of these are given in every single game. If retry is possible, I'll continue with lockpicking, just need to know if it's a single roll or advantage.

    (OOC) Planescape: Intrigue

Yeah once again I am undecided... I am not a fan of changing plans, but even less of splitting the party and Kachilk'cha is already moving away. We could try another door but it feels a bit like gambling until we get a decent roll, so we might as well join her in helping the mystery NPC.

Why all the hate for Turn Undead?

I didn't even remember I started this... buy yeah it was about the WIP mechanics during 5e playtesting.

    D&D General Theros Reforged

It's a good plan, you also have a good bunch of monsters in the MM itself which are very much inspired by Greek mythology, and don't forget to take stuff straight out of Homer's Iliad and Odissey :) You can also find plenty of Greek myth information just on wikipedia!

    (OOC) Planescape: Intrigue

Well let's see if it's a failure, final result is still 7 anyway so it depends on the DC.

D&D 5E (2024) Where should optional rules go and why?

In theory, I would say that player characters options can go in the PHB, and more general game options to the DMG. The alternative methods for generating ability scores are balanced against each other. Feats are balanced against ASI. Multiclassing is supposedly balanced with single-classing...

D&D General How do you know an adventure is "good" just from reading it?

Very simple and yet complicated question... I must say that my perspective has likely changed over the course of 30 years of RPGing. Consider also that since 5e the only long-term campaign I've been running is a family game that is mostly seasonal (i.e. played a lot more during summer and winter...

D&D 5E (2014) Not Again! Retreater Needs to Balance 5e for 7 Players

    1. I don't think you really need to change initiative but either way will work 2. TotM is difficult with a lot of characters, and visualization can help casual players, grid or gridless as you prefer 3. That's gonna be your main concern... try to ask questions to players who aren't proactive...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Without Magic (PCs)

IIRC one Gnome and one Elf subrace have a single cantrip, Drow and Tieflings have more spells. So you still have Human, Dwarf, Wood Elf, Halfling, Rock Gnome, Half-Orc, Half-Elf and Dragonborn without magic. Or you can play Forest Gnome and High Elf as well and ignore just the bonus cantrip...
