D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Best to stay away from personal assumptions and attacks. As far as I can tell we area all talking hypotheticals here

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

I am not saying your wrong, but, as a forever DM, I will argue that the DM has a lot more levers they can pull and adjust. So getting fixated just one seems a bit petty.

It is one you created though. If the reason to play the tortle is the muses are guiding me and that is all I will play. Which is a limited but valid reason. Then the DM saying the muses are guiding me and there are no tortles in this setting is also limited but valid reason. I have never seen...

It is a way to get a tortle to the world, but I don't think that is not a compromise to a DM that doesn't want a tortle in their world. That is simply capitulation.

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

I think that is a valid reason. However, it also seems one where there is no room for compromise if the DM's reason is this world doesn't have them (aka the muses inspired them and they don't want them), which would be equally as valid. I don't know how to square that hole (and thankfully never...

If you want to roleplay being a turtle person, then being a turtle person is a big part of that. I am a forever DM, but growing up I had a huge reptile / dragon/ godzilla fetish. I owned, at one time or another: anoles chameleons basilisks iguanas skinks monitor lizards (savannah and nile)...

Yes, but IME, it was a much worse predictor of difficulty compared to 5e's CR.

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

I think that is a huge assumption. I have never had a player pick a species for mechanical advantage (very difficult for them to even do that with how we do species now). The players I play with, as far as I know, have always picked a species because they want to roleplay being a creature of...

I am sure you know those are not the only options. Additionally, just because someone makes an quick comment on an internet forum doesn't mean they think those are the only options!

DM: "Ok, if that is what you want we can do that. However, I think that is leaving a lot out. Remember this setting was described as being Conan adjacent. Conan was mostly humans but also had beasts and, though rare: giants, monstrosities, demons, etc. However, if you prefer to have it just be...

Well I never said to cut anything. The closest you get to that is to make an assumptions about narrow settings when I responded to post about narrow settings (that is why I used quotes around "narrow." it wasn't my term). Here is the original quote (by @Minigiant ): "Ultranarrow settings are...

    D&D 5E (2024) Hardcore Mode Thoughts?

My thoughts: This doesn't look like hardcore mode to me. My suggestion: Revise the OP title.

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

OK, I find that overly simplistic and not really a reaction to what I said, but again...ok. I mentioned that I think settings should be a place to introduce new stuff (rules, ideas, etc.). I also said restrictions could be minimal or non-existent. The thrust of a "narrow" setting should be to...

I think you are taking that to an extreme. Having different rules doesn't necessarily mean lots of things being restricted or cut (or even any), it just means different ways of doing things. Personally, my group likes restrictions and forced limitations. They thrive on it. I don't think I would...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

I agree with most of your post except this bit: I think the beauty of a narrow setting can be that it strongly pushes a game you're familiar with in new, different, interesting directions without it being a completely new RPG. That is actually what I wish WotC had done and used settings as a...

IDK. We have 1 page of houserules (which I have shared on these forums several times). That is the least amount of houserules we have had in any edition of D&D we have played (1e, 4e, & 5e). So, from our perspective, we are playing D&D more RAW now than ever! To us, D&D = houserules and...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Interesting. I find the 2024 monsters generally more engaging in lively the 2014 MM monsters. Not 100%, but generally they feel more lively, engaging, and interesting to me. Everyone is different!
