What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

    WHAT'S YOUR ALTERNATIVE!!!

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

Maybe it's the part of me that likes OSR, but that just sounds like an emergent story. The character is kind of like Homer Simpson in the boxing episode; he can take a ton of abuse, but he's not going to win any races or fight off getting sick.

D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

I'm assuming chocolate-strawberry-death bans multiclassing for the realism.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

Not a problem, just wanted to clarify I wasn't hopping into a topic about someone else. I'm happy to own my opinions. :)

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

Exactly. I could also have a realistic process for a random chance of the characters having incurable magical cancer, but I don't implement that because that's sounds horrible at the table, no matter how realistic it is.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

I did have an alternative; don't do that story!

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

As "that poster", that is correct. Like most things in life, it's easy to gloss over distinctions between things you're not particularly interested in.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

Sorry! I could hypothesize, but it would be all guesswork.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

    Not sure. I've never tried.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

I just don't do "you had something stolen" storylines. In my experience, it doesn't lead to compelling gameplay. I haven't had players clamoring to be pickpocketed from, well, ever.

D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

As one of the vehement posters, I would point out that "GM shouldn't limit player choice" and "worldbuilding belongs exclusively to the players" has a large, large amount of space between those two positions. Racial and class choices are a very small part of worldbuilding.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

An encounter in which the players can make meaningful decisions as to how to proceed. "A thief stealing something via off-screen resolution methods that the players have no access to" is only principled play for games where you assume sim/trad principles. That being that the fiction gets its...

D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

It's not really the transformation that's problematic. It isn't even really about invoking a consequence. It's more about the idea that the GM is evaluating your play, finding it lacking, and then administering punishment. It's deep in the DNA of the game, with paladins getting forced back...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

It looks like GM fiat, which is why I don’t do it.

But none of those characters exist together. We’re not doing the Lanefan thing where everyone’s setting is connected to everyone else’s.

D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

It is an issue! I hate it! Edit: And also, there aren’t thousands of PCs. There are maybe 6?

D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

I also think that the patron should have a lot of leverage in the narrative. Where we probably disagree is that I don’t think that a GM’s judgment call is necessary to implement that leverage. Now, for the OP, since it was the player’s specific request to implement such a relationship, of...

D&D General Warlocks' patrons vs. Paladin Oaths and Cleric Deities

What part of my posts gives any indication I care about things like RAW or previous lore? I couldn’t care less about what’s correct. I care about what makes for the best gameplay and most interesting stories.

And if that happens, all the better. “Disillusioned cleric tries to find the origin of faith driven magic” sounds like a story hook to me.

Because clerics don’t get their powers from gods, of course. Asked and answered.
