Making the cut for your TTRPG library

Usually before I buy them / after I've flipped through them at Barnes and Noble.

What do you like in a session write-up?

It seems like everyone who wants an opinion on what to do next in his/her game provides a writeup that is waaaaay too long. I don't need to know what town Zorak is from and what school of wizardry his sister-in-law is considering for a specialization - to offer my opinion on whether he should...

    The Muppet Show

Funny how shortly after these two mention the show (producers?) being broke, there's a quick reminder that Disney and ABC are behind it.

    Test Adventure. Brave souls wanted.

Fun is trickling in! You can try Eamon's Beginners' Cave with the link in the updated Original Post. Eamon, or "the Wonderful World of Eamon," is one of the earliest text-based RPGs on computer. It was an open system to which any user could create its own dungeon/quest module and add to the...

Distinct Game Modes: Combat vs Social vs Exploration etc...

One could say that a shift in game mode (application of a different set of rules) is necessary for fitting the feeling of a scene. Conversation amongst friends feels pretty comfortable, so a comfortable set of rules for it is appropriate. Armed combat is decidedly uncomfortable, exacting...

    Question thread practice

Sure looks that way. I was hoping that this was the new version of the upvote/downvote thread. I guess it's gone by the wayside.

Karma, Rewards /Consequences Do you use it? If so, what is good, and if not what is bad?

Just checking ;) Longer version: I expect most players to look out for #1 (the player). So I reward them to encourage looking out for #2 (the character) and #3 (the other PCs).

Nick Cage rocks. So I gave him a "green check mark," apparently. Perhaps you'd like to rate him against this legend?

Karma, Rewards /Consequences Do you use it? If so, what is good, and if not what is bad?

What if a player ignores detrimental metagame knowledge? Or chooses to fail a contest instead of rolling? Or actually plays her alignment correctly?

    D&D 5E (2024) What Is 2026's Big Adventure

Did someone say D&D and Big Adventure? Whatever it is, I'm expecting a very cosmopolitan group of allies.

Keeping Track of Time (In Game)

Time-sensitive objectives are age-old game tools. And antagonists wait on no one. My magic-users/spellcasters keep track of time because their power comes back hourly, not daily. This is a little too close to "I just got my vacation time approved by middle management" for my taste. What...

Level Up (A5E) Planning an Adventure101: Please Help

If you already have players, you can find out their feelings on Railroads™ and what their characters' motivations are, to answer some of these questions. One way to decide where to go with stuff is to have a BBEG.* Those make campaign decisions for you. And they're kind of required - unless...

    Life path system in-game

D&D could really use a system like this. I hate making D&D characters.

The oldest tech you still use

I still play the Wonderful World of Eamon, which was originally written in Applesoft BASIC. So, 40 year old tech? Hoping to revitalize it here, BTW . . .

What videogames are you playing in 2026?

The same ones I was playing in 2020, plus RPG Maker MV. I highly recommend it.

    Life path system in-game

I think these are problems that a life path system is designed to overcome. I don't think a detailed backstory is required in all cases, either. It could be as simple as, "bully, valedictorian, burger-flipper." It's hard to be constrained by that. The GM might have to do some fishing to keep...

Collaborative Dungeons, Right Here on ENWorld!

Oh ye dungeon-makers (and dungeon-explorers), Have you ever wanted a web-accessible dungeon document? That you could, say, bring up on your phone while DMing a D&D night at your local tavern? What about having a shared quest that you could build with other ENWorlders, with no need to share...
