D&D 5E (2024) Dear Team WotC: Better Pact Magic Fixes

Fair enough. I wasn’t sure, since they’d still be limited to the same number of spells over all. I figured I’d ask, since I’d assume someone would know why it was a bad idea :) I’m absolutely ok with the Channel Divinity recharge route. Just was wondering if this would accomplish the same...

D&D 5E (2024) Dear Team WotC: Better Pact Magic Fixes

Ok, so here is an out there suggestion (and I can already hear the screaming…heh): If I understand correctly, the game expects most parties to get 2 short rests between long rests. This means a warlock can use their entire allotment of Pact Magic three times between long rests in an ideal...

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

I’m pretty sure I’ve never claimed short rests shouldn’t exist. I’ve only suggested that the reason people think Warlocks don’t get enough spells is that the availability of Short Rests vary considerably table to table and adventure to adventure. Being told the problem is all on our end for...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

I agree! But this goes against all the times you’ve told me my DM is doing it wrong every time I said we can’t always take the short rests we want!

D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

Ok. Yes. The DM is a jerk if they constantly use their (limitless) power to screw over the players. We agree on that. However, if the player’s abuse the knowledge that the DM isn’t going to TPK them every time they rest, it sucks the life (and the shared fantasy) out of the story. It’s back...

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

I totally agree. But there seems to an expectation that instead of managing their resources, they should be allowed to rest anytime they want. Obviously this was a bit of hyperbole on my part, but it’s starting to get tiresome being constantly told we’re doing it wrong by respecting the...

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

And then we're back to the five minute work day. "Oh, you blew 14 spell slots that fight? Guess I have to let you take a long rest now or the next fight will unfairly kill you." There are simply times when it's not possible (story-wise) to take a rest. Maybe some groups are allowed to stop...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Sorry, I’m going to bow out for a bit. I feel like I’m monopolizing the thread trying to defend our adventure and story style, and that’s not the point of this thread. My apologies for hogging the spotlight.

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Of course it’s relevant. If the DM says it’s too risky to rest it is. If the DM says, “sure you can rest, but you’ll probably lose a hostage”, we’re not going to rest. I mean, I don’t get your point. The DM sets the stage, and if it’s a fast paced series of high action encounters (or a race...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Yep, but I guess my point is our quests do tend to chain fights. Monsters tend not to wait in their rooms for us to knock, or there is time-sensitive parts to out quests. It’s just the way they end up. We also have times with no combat, or day long explorations with only one big fight. But...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Sorry, it wasn’t meant to be snark. It’s very easy to squeeze in 2-3 combats and only have a small amount of game time pass. If you stick by the 6-second round rule. So the whole ‘20 minutes since breakfast’ was actually a direct quote from my group. We may be the odd group, in that when we...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Totally fair. It just seems like our adventuring days move too quickly to provide those opportunities. Heh…I’m reminded of The Three Musketeers: Porthos: Champagne? Athos: We're in the middle of a chase, Porthos! Porthos: You're right - something red. :)

    D&D 5E (2024) I like the new Warlock

I think it’s highly unlikely they make any Short Rest changes across the board. Which is why I think the easiest way is to decouple Pact Magic from Short rests. Make it Long rest recharge, with two chances to Channel Patron to recharge in between (to mimic the existing expected Short Rest...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

@Charlaquin, I guess we’ll just have to disagree on that one :). As a player, I just can’t narratively imagine our characters stopping in the middle of any of those situations. It might make a gamist sense, but not story-wise. I don’t want to make it sound like every session is one long...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

So, it’s a DM problem if we can’t take a break in the middle of a multi-encounter chase scene? A prison break? A dungeon with monsters around every corner? Taking breaks depends very much on the adventure you’re playing. My DM likes to keep the pressure on, which means less opportunities for...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

I understand there’s some strong feelings on this, but I think drawing lines in the sand (“0 out of 10!”) is counter productive. I know I’ve benefited a lot from the conversations over the last few days, and have gone from liking the changes to realizing my issue wasn’t Pact Magic but the...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

3 short rests would be glorious. We always seem to be in a situation where it’s too dangerous, or it’s safe and everyone wants a long rest. When you’re the only short rest class, there’s not a lot of onus on the other characters to want a lunch break 20 minutes* after breakfast. *which is my...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Well, yes. The players can rest even if the DM says it’s risky. And then the DM sends in monsters to spoil the rest, because they did warn you. If the DM doesn’t want you to rest right then and there for whatever reason, it’s not happening.
