Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

I mean you can attach various conditions to the result of an action based on the overall damage roll. You could have an ability that says "If you do at least 5 damage on the attack, X condition also occurs." Or you could have another ability that says "If this attack does 0 or less damage, the...

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

I mean, I also wouldn't be opposed to a "both sides" roll anything approach, either. Make everything into opposed checks. But merging "confirm attack, then roll damage" into "how effective is the attack" just seems like a good way to smooth out table operations. And using different dice and...

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

I prefer (damage-defense) over die+mod vs target number because it gives you more granularity over possible results.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

My general preference is for the player to roll both offense and defense, although the GM can roll the magnitude of the effect. GM rolls for damage, and the player rolls to dodge/block/endure some or all of the effect.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

I would not call for a roll there, since the player is not asking to determine anything of consequence.

A third, actually, since all 4s is also a miss.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

This isn't really about the difference between a dice pool and a linear die. This is about the difference between a crit only being rolls at the top of the result range (only a 20 on a d20, or only a 16+ on a 3d6), and thus all crits will be hits, versus having crit results scattered through...

Chance of 3 different values: 120/216 (55.6%) Chance of exactly 2 values matching: 90/216 (41.7%) Chance of 3 values matching: 6/216: (2.8%) Assuming only roles of 14+ on 3d6: Chance of 3 different values: 12/35 (34.3%) Chance of exactly 2 values matching: 21/35 (60%) Chance of 3 values...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

This is the way I look at it. 5e has a skill that can be used to read someone, and ideally identify if they're telling the truth. If the GM calls for that skill to be used to make that determination, then I obey the result of that check, and whatever stakes are assigned for success or failure...

D&D General Characters With Unfinished Business

I'm with @payn, I'm very much a "live in the moment" guy. I'm also not someone who is particularly interested in how stories end; I find the beginning and the middle much more interesting. It's why I'm not bothered that authors like Rothfuss and Martin will never finish their book series, as...

    D&D 5E (2024) This Feels Like 4E

I certainly think that wasn't the original goal for early D&D; the original group was focused on creating a houseruled version of a wargame. Those aren't the type of people who do casual! Being able to onboard new players is almost certainly a design goal for modern D&D like 5e, but D&D has...

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

I'm just not seeing the weight of the need here. To me, the goal of class balance is to ensure that a player never feels that their choice is completely overshadowed by another option, such that they made the "wrong" choice by not picking a different option. But there's also an expectation...

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

Does it, though? I mean, the new MM has introduced a bunch of new enemies with uncounterable "spells", so it wouldn't be a new and novel thing. It would shine against certain classes of magic-resistant enemies, sure, but plenty of PC classes have stronger matchups against certain families of...

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

There's always a few people who think their personal headcanon is the only possible way to interpret something. :(

    World of Warcraft: Midnight

As of the end of Legion, Sargeras is currently trapped on Argus, with Illidan functioning as his jailer. I can't imagine they aren't going to pull that thread back in at some point, but the timing is open to question. Sargeras's sword is still planted within Azeroth, and has been brought up...

D&D General So… psionic powers are no longer purely mental?

That's what it was. What is might be is still up for discussion. The value of maintaining a "tradition" is not weighed particularly heavily, AFAIK, unless the surveys indicate otherwise.

    D&D 5E (2024) This Feels Like 4E

Agreed; the arguments here have a similar tenor to the "racial stat adjustments" discussions of the last few years. It's a question of how much of a "choice" is present in choosing (or not choosing) the mechanically strongest option. And a lot of the weight of that choice boils down to...
