What are you reading in 2026?

Yesterday I finished the Doctor Who audio book of a Peter Davison (Doctor Five) Weeping Angel story involving Michaelangelo. It was fun, involved some time stuff, famous history looped in, and callbacks to David Tenant's (Doctor Ten's) Blink episode that introduced the Weeping Angels. I enjoyed...

City Supplements - What do we like?

Sure, but even being for a specific game system I sometimes really prefer more general descriptions and less specifics to keep the city flexible on stat power level. For instance I really like the 10 pages on the White Witch ruled city of Whitethrone in the Pathfinder 1e Cities of Golarion...

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

I'm not quite certain I am reading you right here. A successfully hidden sniper should not expect to get a shot off before anyone in the group reacts?

City Supplements - What do we like?

I was going to say almost no statblocks but this is a good reason to want them. You generally want to be able to pull out any of those things for a city adventure.

My Changing Thoughts on Science Fantasy Games

That's fine, for me calling it scientifically explained psychic powers instead of magic does not change it from science fantasy. I expect in the Shadowrun universe they have scientific theories of how magic works and that does not change their magic from being fantasy to science fiction in my...

My Changing Thoughts on Science Fantasy Games

I think for a gaming purpose we would still classify it as on the fantasy end of the science fantasy spectrum while the replicators and Klingon cloaking ships would be on the speculative science tech end. Any fictional universe with magic in it from an in-world perspective the supernatural...

My Changing Thoughts on Science Fantasy Games

Absolutely it matters. In the Star Trek RPG anyone can use the tech phasers and replicators and faster than light speed and such and we do not consider them magic users because they do so. Only the psychic Vulcans can mind meld.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

The rest of the party is involved because the whole party is close enough together for the scene :) The leopard beat the best passive perception in the party, he is hidden from them all. Initiative determines the order of combat and the party is surprised by combat starting. They all roll...

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

I never took statistics but it seems like somebody beating the ambusher's initiative would happen fairly frequently when a solo ambusher attacks somebody in a party of PCs just from each PC rolling individually. Four or so people with disadvantage are going to have one of them beat the single...

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

And I have been DMing and playing 1e-5e 14 but the 5e 24 surprise rules are new and different and I am trying to wrap my head around how they work RAW and the implications of them. I thought my initial two methods in the OP were both reasonable to read it and run it, I did not think people...

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

I am guessing the issue was the powerfully impactful nature of getting two full rounds of actions when someone gets surprise and wins initiative in 5e 14. If most fights only last a few rounds (3-5) getting a two round headstart advantage is pretty big. Under 24 rules the biggest advantage to...

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

But we have the stealth versus perception part to generally handle that narrative element of being noticed and that gets resolved before the initiative roll. It would seem a bit of a weird narrative disconnect for a PC ninja to win a stealth check to successfully not be noticed then get...

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

So you don't use the 24 surprise rules and continue using the 14 ones. Got it. Under the 14 rules an ambusher will get one or two rounds worth of actions off before the surprised can go. Under the 24 rules they can only get one off before the ambushee.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

I don't think it would be worse for a whole party. Consider situation A the party loses initiative and the hidden ooze on the ceiling goes first. It attacks someone with advantage from being hidden then the party goes and can attack the ooze. Situation B the party wins initiative over the...
