    Response to TheGM's HARP question

Well, Iron Crown's website might be a good place to start: http://www.ironcrown.com/

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

FGU, as I understand it, was kind of a publishing house for games designed by freelancers. In addition to the games you mentioned, they also published (and in some cases technically still publish) Villains and Vigilantes, Flashing Blades, Bushido, Year of the Phoenix, Merc, Daredevils, Psi...

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

It's easy to find bad free games. The only game I've ever paid money for and tossed in the trash a day or two later was a superhero RPG I picked up around 1990, called something like Enforcers IIRC. The text spent a lot of time dwelling on how simple and intuitive the rules were, while also...

Worst RPG System You Ever Palyed?

Or in other words, a lot like the MegaTraveller system, which predates d20 by around 15 years IIRC. CODA's LOTR is pretty decent, given that they had to stick to the movies. ICE's MERP has generally better supplements, but their license was apparently a lot more permissive so they could flesh...

Why I don't write FRP articles any more

Well, I did play second edition, and I know that - at the level of the core rulebooks - it was almost the same as first edition. So he seems to have got that one pretty much right. Otherwise, it seems to me a lot of people in this thread are missing what seems to me to be his major point...

    The Baghdad Battery

Before then, in all likelihood - the first steam engine dates from the 1st century AD (invented by Heron of Alexandria), and Greek engineers had been working with steam as much as 250 years earlier than that. But to say they "had steam power technology" is a bit of an overstatement - Heron's...

    Old TSR Mini Games

I saw that - really nice to see. "Demonlord" is right up there with "Divine Right" as my favourite fantasy wargame of all time, I guess I'm going to have to get reacquainted.

Interesting Ryan Dancey comment on "lite" RPGs

I think it's more a minis thing than a British thing - WOTC entered the minis market with the idea of becoming a major player, and that means trying to take some of GW's market share (I have no idea, and don't much care, if they actually have, the attempt is enough for a company to take notice)...

    Old TSR Mini Games

"They've Invaded Pleasantville" was actually my favourite. IIRC the aliens replace townsfolk, so the Pleasantville side doesn't actually know who the bad guys are until they find them. OTOH, the alien side is usually stuck with some pretty wimpy invaders at the start. Decent mechanics and a...

    Best Resolution System?

Best percentile system I'm aware of is Unknown Armies. It has a few cool tricks, like allowing players to reverse the order of their rolls in special cases and making doubles (like 11, 22, etc.) special results. Also has a pretty cool insanity system, good game.

    Best Resolution System?

I guess I'm not making myself clear. I've already agreed that THAC0 is objectively worse. I just don't see how it's objectively so much worse that people hold it up as some huge problem resolved by 3E. That particular change was incredibly minor - as I've already shown objectively from the...

    Best Resolution System?

Sure, but that's like saying vanilla ice cream is universally worse than french vanilla ice cream. There's still not a whole lot of difference between the two, and no explanation for the implacable hatred displayed toward THAC0.

Where did you find your first groups?

I built my first group; I was the first to hear about this AD&D thing in my school, got the books, and introduced it to my friends. I discovered that one of my friends had an older brother who also played, so that gave me exposure to another group to help work out various rules problems (1E AD&D...

Sorry - I think the point was missed...

This game actually already exists - it's called the Hero System (Fifth Edition, Revised, also known as FREd). Fully point based, it's possible to stat out everything in the world within the system if you want, and various supplements provide templates and other shortcuts for players (and GMs)...

    Best Resolution System?

The current system: Roll + bonus = AC hit The THACO system: THACO - (roll + bonus) = AC hit Not exactly a huge difference, this was actually one of the smallest changes from 2E to 3E. I've never understood the widespread dislike of THAC0, unless it's due to some irrational fear of...

Sorry - I think the point was missed...

With all due respect, it doesn't sound like full VR is necessary to match what you do as a DM. From what you posted, it seems to me that multiplayer TOEE with better AI would come pretty close to matching the DMing services you provide for your group, thus allowing you to just play the game. The...

Sorry - I think the point was missed...

That's nice, but why did you reply to my post in order to give your testimonial? I didn't claim that it's impossible for anyone to be a DM without doing any design work, I merely said that for some number of DMs the design process is what makes them DM instead of play. But if you do want...

Sorry - I think the point was missed...

Hmm. I would have bet money that default assumption must be held by the designers of 3E, because it seems to me that 3E sought, above all else, to standardize the tools used in content design and as a result encourage DMs to engage in such design. The alternative viewpoint - that DMing should...

    What's "rules light" to you?

It's now available as Tri-Stat dX, which is a generified version with pretty much all the rules material from BESM and Silver Age Sentinels, in about 90 pages. Pretty decent book.

    What's "rules light" to you?

Not quite - conflict resolution uses either of two alternate mechanics, based on how important the conflict is to the story. Whether the conflict in question is a combat or not isn't particularly important. You use the same mechanics for a debate or a race or a flower arranging contest or...
