Dungeons & Dragons releases Villainous Options playtest

Sorry, with the exception of the death knight feats, nothing here screams Dragonlance. 😉 And this stuff is far too raw to make a 2026 book. By the time they get the feedback and digest it, it would be time to go to print. And heaven forbid anything gets a red review because they are going to...

Dungeons & Dragons releases Villainous Options playtest

Way too late for anything coming in 2026. This is a 2027 project UA

Dungeons & Dragons releases Villainous Options playtest

I'm guessing that this is a rather niche product for more experienced players and DMs, so I think they have a good place here as more complicated rule to allow a normally forbidden option. I would not like to see them be used Willy Nilly in books aimed towards beginners.

We're getting a Book on Icky Badstuff for 5.5! Ngl, it might be interesting to see them try their hand again at evil PC support. The last few tries in other editions have been lackluster

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

I can absolutely see their point. While I wish D&D had a mono setting, I understand completely that there is no way WotC could or would abandon the Forgotten Realms or Eberron. Likewise, I don't imagine any new settings are going to stray far from the core assumptions. No matter how many people...

D&D General How elder scroll does species

My simple fix was to allow PCs to choose their classes ability score in addition to the background ones. It keeps the flavor while also allowing wider class allowance. For example: a noble who is a rogue can boost str, int, cha (background) and dex (rogue).

    D&D 5E (2024) Building A Contemporary Fantasy Setting For 5.5E

Well FF never uses the real world, but that wasn't what I was going for in my example. That does raise a bit of an issue however. If we are talking a setting fit for publishing, you would have to be very cautious about how D&D's supernatural elements mesh with real world beliefs, especially in...

    D&D 5E (2024) Building A Contemporary Fantasy Setting For 5.5E

That is what seems to be why this thread is all over the place. Some people want D&D with a modernistic setting while others want "realistic looking Earth with fantasy elements" and others want Eberron magic tech or sci-fi elements.

    D&D 5E (2024) Building A Contemporary Fantasy Setting For 5.5E

The four dudes on a road trip in the convertible in the middle of a desert akin to the southwest US getting into adventures was the vibe I was looking for, not necessarily the exact technology or setting. It's not 1:1, but that feel to me was very urban fantasy in a way Eberron isn't.

    D&D 5E (2024) Building A Contemporary Fantasy Setting For 5.5E

That would be the draw for me. Advancing the tech to see what D&D looks like with cell phones and desert eagles. When Final Fantasy 15 starts with your party on a road trip, that's almost the feel I'd want.

    D&D 5E (2024) Building A Contemporary Fantasy Setting For 5.5E

Vehicle rules exist already. You just need to create stats for modern vehicles. Bare in mind, I'm not saying you wouldn't need some new things. You would need to stat new gear, probably add new subclasses, feats and backgrounds. But you don't need to rewrite base classes or combat rules or redo...

    D&D 5E (2024) Building A Contemporary Fantasy Setting For 5.5E

I think it's doable, but I think everyone is trying to overthink it. Start with the basic assumptions of a D&D world (let's assume 5.5 assumptions). Then you advance the technology of the setting to something closer to our modern world. You don't need to justify the advancement any more than...

Wes Schneider is the product lead for Ravenloft: The Horrors Within

More WoD than CoC. A crapsack world you cannot win in but merely survive by sacrificing as few morals as possible. It certainly fits that 90s dystopia vibe.

And you aren't even safe with that. You could absolutely end up with the problem of "Wizarding World doesn't stop Hitler in order to keep magic a secret" problem. I really only see two options as viable if KISS is a requirement. 1. Marvel Method: the world doesn't react logically to the...

D&D General How elder scroll does species

I don't even think it works that well in The Elder Scrolls. There are arguably five species (human, elf, orc, khajit and argonian) but they stretched them into ten via subrace bs. I wonder how that will be handled in TES 6 if/when it happens.

    D&D 5E (2024) Building A Contemporary Fantasy Setting For 5.5E

I saw it as a D&D setting with different technology rules than the core book normally has. It has been argued that D&D can support settings with far lower technology (such as ancient Greece or Dark Sun) with minimal rewriting of the rules. This is the same idea in the opposite direction. And I...

    D&D 5E (2024) Building A Contemporary Fantasy Setting For 5.5E

No, but the minute you have teleportation circles, you have the same effect Star Trek transporters have. You start to lose the "world outside your door" aspect. It's a world building issue that any sort of speculative fiction wrestles with I guess. After all, the Marvel universe is full of Gods...
