Taking computer RPG material into your table-top RPG

My first dungeon maps were pretty much copied from a Final Fantasy 1 strategy guide. There. I said it. Bonus: I had no idea who Strahd was, but the name stuck (prob from reading a catalog) when I ran a Castlevania-like, haunted castle dungeon where the "final boss" was a certain vampire named...

Kickstarter-Style Preorders: The Future of RPGs?

Not to derail the excellent information thus far, but what is the documentary about, if you don't mind me asking?

Kickstarter-Style Preorders: The Future of RPGs?

You have a point. This could probably be mitigated somewhat by having preview material (out of the manuscript) available for the "try before you buy" folk, but I imagine there's not much more you can do with that.

need a city campaign module, recommendations?

While we're speaking of Yggsburgh, Gary Gygax's book The Canting Crew comes with a London-like city (Ludnum) along with a map to go with all the thieves' guild info the book provides (it's d20.)

Kickstarter-Style Preorders: The Future of RPGs?

So, Troll Lords Games (makers of Castles & Crusades) have used Kickstarter recently to finance one of their latest books, Classic Monsters to seemingly great success, and they're doing a similar thing for their next book: Winter Runes. This makes me wonder whether, with the recent doom and...

The Guards at the Gate Quote

I took a kitchen knife to the foot last night. True story. I'm home w/ a stitched & bandaged foot :( ---- I think what is key here is to go with the player's wishes. If they find it fun to interact with the world then as the DM you should oblige. If they just want to get back to the...

    New Years Resolutions For Gamers

My list isn't nearly that long, but I have a couple of gaming resolutions/challenges for the coming year: 1. Replay/rerun older (pre 2000) D&D; to get back to my roots. 2. Take advantage of the awesome gift that was the OGL and attempt to write my own D&D "heartbreaker" as a personal game...

    Dear Mike & Monte

Mike & Monte, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if there were good editions or bad. Why we played, or why we fought (on the net). All that matters is that two (game designers) stood against many (fans). That's what's important...

What makes Dungeons & Dragons "Dungeons & Dragons?"

I've been recently thinking a lot about the "sacred cows" of D&D, and why, to some, more recent editions have lost the "feel" of D&D. I now grudgingly admit that (after playing for three years) the current edition has lost something, but I can't exactly put my finger on it. Could it be that...

    RPG books you returned...

I had one Star Wars RPG (d20) book I had to return because of mismatched pages. Another D&D 4e book I bought once had smudged ink and weird wrinkling on some pages. I was glad I opened it before leaving the store (it was shrink-wrapped.) Otherwise, I've had pretty good luck with the quality...

What if Dungeons & Dragons Had Never Become a Commercial Success?

But still a cultural one! We all know games that, while not strictly commercial, are still well-known and played currently. Games like: Tag, Hide and Seek, Dodgeball, drinking games such as Beer Pong, or party games like Charades. What do you think the RPG hobby would look like today if such...

Do you want/are you ready for a D&D 5th edition?

No...because I'm getting kind of tired of incompatible D&D editions. Yes...if they can somehow make an edition that a) reunites the fan base, and b) makes me feel like it's the 1990s again. I know...purely selfish, pie-in-the-sky nostalgia
