D&D 5E (2014) It takes too long to say "Combat Superiority"

    Can-o-whoopass. 4 syllables.

    D&D 4E 4e/5e hybrid...

What about making all move actions standard actions and making all minor actions either free, except those designed to compliment another action. Those can work like a fighter's expertise dice - tacked on to a standard action. Leave interrupts and reactions as is - 5e accommodates reactions.

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell Idea

The most iconic image of this to me is from Conan the Destroyer - the scene where Akiro and Thoth-Amon are wizard dueling over a door. No flash or explosions. Thoth tries to close the door magically and Akiro makes a magical gesture and stares at it to try and keep it open, groaning and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell Idea

Yep. That's going on my list of suggestions for the next playtest survey.

    Playtest Update

I just posted this over on the "Defining Traits of the D&D Classes" thread, but it seems apropos to the discussion of Vancian vs. non-Vancian magic going on here.

    D&D 5E (2014) Defining Traits of the D&D classes

ON VANCIAN MAGIC: I hate it. At least, I hate it as the core spell casting mechanic. Each fantasy setting usually has its own story about the nature of magic and how one comes to wield it. I feel the Vancian system imposes too much narrative on what should be a very generic archetype (the...

    D&D 5E (2014) What about the rouge?

D'OH! Well that explains it. We totally goofed up in our reading of the rules. Looks like there is actually NO benefit to flanking in the current play test, if I am reading it correctly.

What I learned from Boardgames: The hidden power of the character sheet

O... M... G!!!! I have seen the Grail of all Nerdom, and been transformed. :D

    D&D 5E (2014) What about the rouge?

My group had only started the Caves of Chaos when the second playtest hit, so we elected to carry on with that adventure by updating the characters win the new character creation rules and using the new bestiary. We found that along about 3rd level, the rogue could break the game for everyone...

    D&D 5E (2014) Defining Traits of the D&D classes

ILLUSIONIST I really like the backstory/fluff for illusionists in Castles & Crusades. They are similar, but not identical to a wizard, both being referred to as different traditions from among the larger category of magi. Illusionist are the ones who "make a mockery of reality itself" and are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sacred Shooter

I think you're spot on. It's seems that the way fighters are intended to do their version of resource management is figuring out when and where to spend expertise dice, particularly once they have more than one per round. Spilling them up to pull off two maneuvers like this is what they are...

The Bard isn't the jack of all trades... the Ranger is

I think the larger point is that all classes really have a diversity of skills, abilities, techniques, and knowledge that can shine in different situations if given the opportunity and that uber-min/maxed one trick ponies that have to sit around waiting for their specific type of encounter to...

Things (i.e. Goblins) That Go Bump in the Night

Great suggestions all around. Thanks! The more I've thought about backstory, the more I think I would like goblins to have some established footholds. The play test materials say dwarves once ruled vast kingdoms that have since fallen. Guess what part of the mortal world is ripe for conquest...

Things (i.e. Goblins) That Go Bump in the Night

Something else I'm tryin to model is that goblins can stay in our world past the break of dawn, but really don't want to. The vulnerability to sunlight is a great start, but I'd like some other reason why they want to make their raids and then get back to an area that will vanish back into...

Things (i.e. Goblins) That Go Bump in the Night

Here's my first crack at the warding spell: Goblin Ward Minor Abjuration You create a magical barrier that cannot be crossed by goblins or similar creatures. Effect: You ward a single man-made portal or threshold against incursion by creatures of the goblin subtype for 24 hours. This can...

Things (i.e. Goblins) That Go Bump in the Night

Thanks. Permanent structures only is a great idea. Also perhaps it has to be renewed every so often. A first level cleric or wizard could make it last long enough for along rest. It takes a high level caster and a heap of spell components make it last a year?

Things (i.e. Goblins) That Go Bump in the Night

Good point. After posting this it occurred to me that in this type of setting, goblins can't be mooks for 1st level characters to push around. They need to be a bit more threatening. Human and demihuman villains should be the first ones fledgling heroes face.

D&D 5E (2014) Class Mechanics Idea: The Warlord

You know, people have been saying "Warlord as a type of fighter" but "Warlord as a type of bard" makes sense. Look at how they did the Dragon Sorcerer - upgrading weapon and armor capacity. Upgrade a bard's weapons and armor so it can handle frontline combat, and you might get a good warlord.

Things (i.e. Goblins) That Go Bump in the Night

I am thinking of creating a small, simple home brew for play-testing DDN by revisiting a concept I had for a campaign but never got to use before. It basically takes goblins and their ilk back to a fairy tale type setting where they truly do only come out at night because it's the only time...
