    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

My reaction was almost a mirror of yours at first, but I've come to be ok with it. 1. There's hardly any high level creatures anyway, so you end up making your own a lot using the DMG rules. These are generally better - I find DMG created creatures have more hps and more damage, but slightly...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dex Vs Strength

    That's pretty cool and cinematic.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dex Vs Strength

It's kind of class dependant and what role you want to play. TWF Rangers can do quite decent damage being Dex based. Barbarians will want strength obviously and they make great 'tanks' because of their DR. Fighters, well, you can create a great all round Fighter with Dex using Crossbow Expert...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dex Vs Strength

You said 'choose for damage', so strength. Greatsword + Great Weapon Master = damage.

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

Not only that, once PC's get to higher levels it becomes easier for them to dictate the pace of when/where they rest, not the DM. There's only so many times you can throw in contrived timelines to hurry them up. D&D still feels more natural with 3-5 encounters per day. I don't think after over...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

The core issue isn't really the CR system. It's the fact a lot of higher level monsters aren't that fearsome anymore "out of the box". This is a consequence of 1. Faster combats and 2. DM workload streamlining. There is an expectation from previous editions that creatures such as the Solar...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

I know exactly how CRs work. How is it when I use the DMG rules to create a custom monster, I almost always end up with a vastly more satisfactory result than the equivalent monsters manual creature?

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

I don't buy the whole feature not a bug argument. Low levels can be pretty fricken deadly. Running POTA I've had to hold back a couple of times or I'd be looking at a TPK. My higher level game I had to throw everything I could at them to challenge them. If D&D was designed with easy mode in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

I ran a campaign to level 19. Single creatures from the MM don't last long at high levels, and many are on the soft side. Using the DMG rules to calculate CR, or create custom monsters works a lot better. I'll also echo what others have said; a hard fight is only hard after a 4+ combats, and...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse campaign recaps

My group cleared out Feathergale spire (the fight at the top was VERY hard - the only won because they thunderwaved Thurl off the pinnacle) then talked their way straight into the depths of the howling hatred temple. They're level 4, so it's going to be interesting to see if they can get out in...

Sword Coast Legends vs. Divinity Original Sin.

I got bored of divinity due to the boring powers system and lack of party diversity. SCL is nothing like DOS, it has a DM mode to start with.

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

Hah yup that's pretty much it!

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

There's nothing in the rules AFAIK that state you can't cast two spells in one turn. What you're thinking of is the bonus action rule. If you cast a spell as a bonus action, then your standard action spell must be a cantrip. Reactions are not part of that rule because they're not bonus actions.

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

Yup counterspelling counterspells happens quite frequently in my high level game, but I am facing a Bard & Wizard (so counterspelling the counterspellers counterspell), and also if the NPC caster pops shield, they can't counterspell (no reaction).

    D&D 5E (2014) PotA Worth Buying?

I completely agree with you on all of this. We also figured out through eavesdropping where they were going, so it made the whole thing semi-pointless. The value of this chapter seems to depend on how much effort the DM wants to put into it to make it plausible and/or how much the players are...

    D&D 5E (2014) PotA Worth Buying?

My group has been really struggling with Hoard except the dungeons. None of us invested much in Charisma except our Sorcerer, who only likes to intimidate. In hind sight I definitely would have invested more in Charisma had I known how much this module depended on Charisma (and our DM who...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

I started letting my players roll arcana/religion checks to see if they could figure out what spell level it is. It does make it quite easy for them to completely shut down enemy casters at higher levels though so I'm having second thoughts about that rule. Nothing like your NPC caster's 9th...

    D&D 5E (2014) PotA Worth Buying?

I've almost finished Hoard of the Dragon Queen as a player - and I am running Princes of the Apocalypse as a DM. My opinion is the "story" is better in HoTDQ - especially if you cut out the incredibly pointless traveling component - although it has it's issues. Chapter 4 in HoTDQ is probably by...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse campaign recaps

I've started running this and here's what I did. I've been emphasising the strange weather patterns in the region. The Knights have been troubled by this and reached out for the delegation for assistance. Since it's compromised of scholars etc, they have aided the call and were traveling to the...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do wizards STILL have to use daggers, etc.?

It's much safer to stand back and attack than to get up in a Bugbears face with 15AC and ~8 hitpoints.
