    D&D 5E (2014) The alignments defined

I don't think taking a "medieval POV" is useful in alignment discussions. We don't live in a medieval period, and trying to add a "medieval filter" to how we interpret the alignment system only makes using alignment even more difficult than it already is. We don't live in the medieval era. We...

D&D 5E (2014) Ghosts of Saltmarsh: Pre or Post GHW?

I just wanted to necro this thread to mention that according to the greyhawk timeline here, the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh takes place in the CY 570's which puts it pre-GHW. The module also puts King Skotti on the throne of Keoland, as according to Living Greyhawk, Skotti dies in 594 and is...

D&D 5E (2014) How I would have done the Priest/Cleric class differently with Hindsight

Which again, seems odd because the Cleric is the one that wields all of the divine power. Paladins are fighters with a little divine oomph behind them. You would think if either were chosen by the gods, it would be the one with divine magic coming out his earballs.

D&D 5E (2014) How I would have done the Priest/Cleric class differently with Hindsight

The D&D cleric has always struck me as a bit of an anomaly. We have this other class, the paladin, that covers the crusading warrior, who dons armor and weapon to vanquish enemies of the faith. And I think it does that job well. So what is the cleric, then? Well, the answer seems to be a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with this theme

What are your feelings on Tinker Gnomes? The priests of Gond build mechanical servants called Gondsmen. They were a class feature of the 3.5 Techsmith Prestige Class. They weren't terribly smart (Int 4) but perhaps the event that made you a Warlock gifted you with additional intelligence/agency.

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Score Balance: through the eyes of fresh players

Watch out now! This is FLAMESTRIKE's table! Ain't no 8 intelligence barbarian making no INT checks! You better check yo'self!

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Score Balance: through the eyes of fresh players

If they aren't role playing in good faith, that strikes me as a table problem, and not a problem to be fixed with mechanics. If I don't trust my PC's to role play their characters, then what are we doing at this table together? I don't see low-Int characters making Int checks as a problem...

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Score Balance: through the eyes of fresh players

"You aren't roleplaying your character dumb enough" is a pretty vague criticism. My idea of "8" and your idea of "8" aren't necessarily always going to be the same. Leveraging mechanical penalties against your players when they aren't roleplaying to your liking strikes me as an antagonistic...

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Score Balance: through the eyes of fresh players

Comparing this to Constitution, which as far as stats go is "Always a bridesmaid, never the bride" and Dexterity is "Always a bridesmaid, and sometimes the bride, too" Strength and Intelligence are either the bride, or they aren't invited to the wedding.

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Score Balance: through the eyes of fresh players

These are niche threats, though. "I had better put a couple extra points in INT in case I run into a mind flayer or get hit by a maze spell" is kind of... odd. If a player said this at my table I would probably think they needed a little help weighing the cost/benefits of their ability scores...

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Score Balance: through the eyes of fresh players

I think between INT and STR, INT is the dumpiest of the dump stats. Adventuring can take you to some precarious places and even the flat-footed scholar can be called upon to roll an athletics check every now and again. If you have low INT, it's not hard to ride on the coattails of a smart...

    AD&D 2E Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play AD&D 2E? How Was/Is It?

2nd edition did a lot to spur my imagination, but I rarely got a chance to play. I still have my 2nd edition books... and yes the binding of my PHB is falling apart, I always assumed it was from many hours pouring over it. Thac0 was a headache, though.
