    D&D 5E (2014) Orion Black No Longer a D&D Designer [UPDATED!]

What a fun thread to necro. The problem is that with no control, no effort being put forth to diversify, the result will NOT be people being hired by merit alone. Those doing the hiring will avoid hiring the diverse hire in favor of someone "more like me" or "more like the rest of the team" or...

D&D 5E (2014) The Fall Of The Dwarves: What Races Do People Actually Play?

I think dwarves are probably one of the most thoroughly pigeonholed D&D races. I think a lot of it has to do with so much focus placed on their professions (Pick One: Miner, Stonemason, Smith) that it leaves the race feeling a bit one-dimensional. Another angle I have seen more than once...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #7: Ranger

I feel like the Studied Adversary feature should be broadened out to be a general "I am an expert on monsters" ability. As it is, a ranger can switch it out after a long rest, which kind of defeats the purpose of it being a "monster grudge" type of ability. I think that concept has outlived it's...

    D&D 3.x Jewish magic items?

We're applying game-world logic to some pretty ancient stories so we gotta have a little wiggle room to make anything fit. The form is there -transforming a staff into a snake- and I doubt the resemblance is coincidental.

    D&D 3.x Jewish magic items?

Another pre-existing Jewish magical item is the Staff of the Python. Moses tells Aaron to throw his staff down in front of the Pharoh and it will turn into a snake. Aaron does, and it does. (The visiers of the pharoh do the same thing, only they use magic. Aaron's snake eats all the other...

    Resurrection implications

I would be curious how most DM's describe these visits to the afterlife. I think at my table we always assumed a sort of afterlife amnesia. Or the character might experience some kind of holding pattern, the "tunnel of light" or similar.

    Resurrection implications

I think the base assumption of D&D is that Resurrection is fairly common. I say this because it is treated like a non-issue, just something PC's might need to spend their treasure on. Also, I think most DM's want to continue to provide reasonable opposition to the players at 9th level and...

Nominate Your Favourite RPG Podcasts of 2020!

If I am not too late... Mage: The Podcast Mage: The Podcast Category: Talk Why: Mage: The Ascension is a fascinating RPG and there is a lot that can be said about it, both helpful and not. Mage: The Podcast does a great job of presenting the game in a coherent way and discussing Mage and how it...

D&D 5E (2014) How Do You View the Combat Round in 5E?

5e combat feels very blow-by-blow to me. There's wiggle room for a little bit of narrative seasoning, but for the most part, it feels like 1 die roll = 1 swing of your weapon. This isn't supposed to be the case narratively, but the mechanics tell a different story. Looking at the last samurai...

Dragonlance [Dragonlance/Faerun] Anyone here met any Cataclysm/Wall of the Faithless defenders?

My complaint isn't that FR "dared to be different." I am fine with FR being different. I would encourage FR to be as unique as it can be. My complaint is that FR faithless and real world atheists/agnostics share so much in common that they are both the same thing, and the writers of FR have gone...

Dragonlance [Dragonlance/Faerun] Anyone here met any Cataclysm/Wall of the Faithless defenders?

This would be what has been termed as the "Thermian Argument." It's named for the Thermians in Galaxy Quest, an alien race that has no concept of fiction, and treats all texts as historical. In short, the Forgotten Realms isn't real. They could have constructed the afterworlds of FR any way...

Dragonlance [Dragonlance/Faerun] Anyone here met any Cataclysm/Wall of the Faithless defenders?

And down the philosophical rabbit hole we go. Unfortunately, despite the impressive power the gods wield in FR, and the presence of magic both divine and arcane, and even the text directly stating that they are gods, for the (imaginary) inhabitants of that world they are really still at square...

    D&D 5E (2014) Epic Monsters: Grendel's Mother

In any event, the idea that the reason Grendel attacked Heorot was because of noise is not an invention of Gaiman's. https://www.sparknotes.com/nofear/lit/beowulf/chapter-1/

Campaign Concepts You've Got On Deck

I would like to do a campaign where I flesh out and explore the undersea races of D&D. Sea Elves, Tritons, Locathah, Merfolk, Sahuagin, etc. Why do so many of them mistrust surface people? How does an aquatic society work without the technology of the world above (forged metal, liquid...

Please share tips and resources for Mage the Ascension

I was going to suggest Mage Made Easy as well. In my experience with the game, the very broad scope of the game, along with the scope of power tends to lead games to be very... disjointed. Characters need some reason to associate and work together, and "you're all members of the traditions"...

Do you consider learning a new game to be unpleasant work?

I enjoy learning the rules for a game, because it is like an introduction to all of the different toys you can play with. But when it comes to learning enough to be GM, it can be a bit of a chore because you need to anticipate the sort of questions and needs you might come across by playing.
