    Murder in Baldur's Gate (spoilers!)

I have recently picked up this module and plan on running it. After reading it, I agree with your assessment. Its a bit weird for everyone (including the players) to just forget about the whole murder and get on with other things. I'm thinking of changing the intro so It still happens, but...

D&D 5E (2014) My Players Didn't Like 5e :( Help Me Get Them Into It!!

Your players first impressions are almost exactly the same as mine when I first read 5e. Then I played it, and found it was way more fun than pathfinder. There's still things I hate about it (rulings not rules), but you should all at least give it a try. 5e has actually ruined 4e and 3e/pf...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

I don't think its RAI that a simulacrum heals naturally OR with healing spells, since the spell description is quite explicit in how it's heals. You can't animate arrows because the items can't be worn or carried. Well sure you could throw them on the ground, but if you weren't prepared that...

D&D 5E (2014) How are you all finding the encounter building rules working out at higher levels?

Current campaign is level 17. 1. Solos don't work that well at high levels, even with legendary actions. Players save their nova abilities for hard fights and can take a single creature down quickly. 2. If you start using numbers in your encounters you generally fight stuff much lower than...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] What are your favorite things about 5e?

The flavour of all the classes. Backgrounds - Especially Flaws. The new spell casting system. Fluidness of combat.

D&D 5E (2014) What do you think Wizard's preferred customer is like and what are his/her buying habits?

Someone like me. Play the game, recruit others to playing the game, but also play their CRPGs, and get excited about their new upcoming titles - like Legends of the Sword Coast. Maybe ideally for them I'll get sucked into MTG as well, but I haven't yet.

D&D 5E (2014) Theatre of the Mind or Miniatures?

I'm sorry I gave you the wrong impression on that. It felt pretty smooth to me, because in our combats there are a hell of a lot of grid measuring for spell attacks/ranged attacks, positioning, measuring out movement distances, discussing where to throw the next fireball so it catches the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

I almost had a TPK with a Mind Flayer Arcanist plus a couple of Deurgar and low level Drow. It was the Mind Flayer that was the real threat. It was the first Mind Flayer in 5e my group had come across and 3/4 of them had dumped int. The next one they came across (CR16 Sorcerer Mind Flayer) they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

I came from a bit of everything mostly, but my most heaviest played D&D before 5e was 3.5. I did some 4e stuff and you had more individual optimisation going on in later versions of the game, because the maths basically required it. The 4e group I played with was pretty hopeless tactically...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

My players aren't so much worried about random encounters as they are ambushes. I ambushed them a lot in the beginning - using legitimate NPC scrying resources. The way we play is generally consume the minimum resources possible - if a cantrip will kill it use a cantrip. Spells like Hold Person...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Exactly. As your party gets higher level, their ability to dictate the pace of the adventure improves. My group would laugh at the idea of random encounters at night, wind walk miles away, throw up a Magnificent Mansion, cover it up with a non detection spell, and rest when they feel like it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Seriously I couldn't think if anything worse than a session filled up with meaningless random encounters, just to try and slow down the party. I hate being railroaded into fights as a player and I certainly will not do the same as a DM. You can't always dictate the pace of the adventure...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

There's a lot of groups out there like that. I watched one stream where the Cleric player barely cast Bless. And the DM struggled against them in terms of NOT killing them. Almost TPKd them at level 3 vs 2*CR2 creatures. On the other hand I watched another stream - also LMoP - with a group of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Two feats are not a huge cost for a Fighter. However, SS + Archery Style is still rather potent, and leaves room for resilient (Wis) etc. We're also only focusing on damage here, but even without the -5/+10 mechanic Sharpshooter is a very good feat and can lead to some game breaking scenarios...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone played to 20th level and kept going?

This reminds me of a MMO called Vanguard. It wad meant to be a successor to Everquest, pretty easy to die in it. Anyway they had a Bard class, and he could equip a little drum like this. He'd take it out and start drumming away and everyone got 300% movement speed and group invisibility...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Yup. A range of 40-60 is going to be much less problematic for a DM than a range of 1-100, despite the fact they both have the same approximate average. I've actually had streaks as a DM where I've rolled maybe 3-4 crits a session. One session I rolled 4 crits *in a row*. In the hands of a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

I can't recall what weapon the Barb player was using. I actually think he may have been using a shield, because he was aiming for the "ultra tank" kind of role. He was pretty hard to take down and did decent damage. Lore Bard/Life Cleric was melee yeah, and did the whole shove thing a lot. He...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

We were running EK + XBE/SS, Wolf Totem Barbarian/Rogue (perma advantage basically), Sorcerer (Twin Haste), and Life Cleric/Lore Bard for a while. We were steamrolling 4 deadly*3 fights per day once we past level 8.

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Having such a large range though means that when you do roll well you can trivialize encounters with one character. They can do 4:1 damage ratios over other characters on an action surge. 140 damage falls within the *expected* range. Without those feats they're "only" doing 2:1 damage ratios...

D&D 5E (2014) Theatre of the Mind or Miniatures?

Yeah there is an official Dungeons and Dragons YouTube channel. They've been running ToEE in 5e. Much better than their Princes stuff. Mike Mearls makes THoM look smooth as silk.
