    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

I am building monsters using the DMG guidelines which generally seem to have much more HP than their MM counter-parts, and also seem to do a lot more damage. I also make some more realistic assumptions about resistances and regeneration than the DMG assumptions which results in more monster HP...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

The game isn't designed for 7 BBEG fights in a day however, and smart players can generally save these resources for those fights. In actual fact, Action Surge *is* the mechanic in which fighters 'nova' damage, but the -5/+10 feats throw that completely out of whack when their penalties are...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E essential spells?

Conjure Animals should be "Check with your DM". I certainly wouldn't let my player dictate what kind of creatures they summon - the "DM has the creatures statistics" could imply that the DM choses the creatures. It might not as well, but I certainly wouldn't let a character summon 8 pixies. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Battlemaster is good all the way through. I enjoy a non-Crossbow Expert Battlemaster with just sharpshooter. You can pick up resilient (Wisdom) since you don't need the crossbow expert feat. Some pros and cons compared to CBX since you can't really tank that well. EK takes a bit to warm up but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Yes which proves you don't need Bless all the time. Bless does contribute more though the higher the target AC and the less your attack bonus (level 8 vs level 11). At level 8 without Bless your damage with SS + EK against an AC20 target drops by 33%. Against AC 11 it only drops by 15%...

    D&D 5E (2014) Poll: Polymorph Shenanigans

We had a chat at our table about this and don't feel that buffs are removed either. It makes Polymorph a very powerful debuff and overshadows dispel magic.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E essential spells?

Spells you should pick no matter what: Spiritual Weapon - great added damage without concentration - bonus action. Death Ward - protect yourself from death 1/day - no concentration required. Faerie Fire - Great to spam at creatures with legendary resistance - they can't afford to fail the save...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Again, tell me what experience you have playing with an SS + Crossbow Expert in your group? I'd like to know why you're convinced there's no possible scenario in which these feats could ever pose a problem. It is a very powerful combo...yet you keep saying that SS is the problem. Is English...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

There have been times where I have cast Holy Aura over bless but its 1/day. Depending on what Cleric you play Spirit Guardians can be great or not great. War Cleric? Great. Light Cleric? Not so great. Bless is still the go to option.

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

But not really. These feats are so far above the rest that if you take them away there isn't really a must have option. There are a few to pick from. Even the nerfed versions are still pretty good. Is there a "must have" melee martial class? Nope. They're all pretty good. Is there a "must...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Yes the Paladin is an example of big damage done right. The player is given a limited resource he/she can use and they must choose wisely when to use it. The Paladin can do some very nice damage, but they can run out of steam quickly. When I push my group - the Paladin is always first to run out...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

I don't know how many times I need to keep repeating this, but I will keep repeating it as much as needed. Bless is -presumably- an easy example for you to grasp of how you can turn -5 into -2.5 - then combined with Archery Style its an effective -0.5 penalty, wiping out the majority of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

I'm noticing this is a "thing" in general with 5e. Single creatures by themselves don't really last - not without giving them action economy efficient spells and such like Shield. Converting 3rd ed content everything is a solo fight against a single tough creature - doesnt work in 5e. Reading...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Four attacks per round? Break that down to see what assumptions you're making there. The Paladin also has to get close, and has to use his 1/short rest ability to get advantage. So for your comparison to be more worth while - the Fighter will be using an action surge as well. And note - The...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

D&D is all about creating exciting and memorable stories... by doing the most damage possible! As an aside, one of my most fondest memories in my recent campaign is when my Wizard player rolled eight 1's in a row on a 10d4 roll. The disgust in his voice at doing a mere 14 damage with a 4th...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Just for the record, I don't have an issue with GWM and/or Polearm master. Having added up all the damage across all rounds of combat they don't get too silly - because they lose a lot of DPR running around the battlefield getting into a position to use their DPR (or throwing handaxes, javelins...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

I'd love to hear your experiences in dealing with Crossbow Expert + Sharpshooter characters in your party. Note - when I was playing an EK at lower levels, we'd quite often scout and then get bless up before the battle. I'm sure you've heard of this technique called scouting. Now that I play a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

I don't care what other feat you take, as long as you're not doing 100 DPR at level 8, creating extra work for me as a DM, and eclipsing other party members.

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

But this is the thing. The rest of the feats are well balanced and interesting because they don't go and pile on numbers. All that aside, the ability of 8th level Fighters to pump out 100 damage in a round 1/short rest doesn't match up with the monsters in the game, and will cause issues for a...
