    General star wars talk/discussion/complaining

IS there any recent good star wars fiction? The last one I read and enjoyed was Twilight Company, the surprisingly good military-sci-fi Battlefront tie in. I did not like Inferno Squad as much.

    Shadowdark: Stocking A Dungeon Example

Unsurprisingly, I find the randomness to be a feature -- maybe THE feature. That is why I am using the tables instead of carefully crafting something that the players are going to find far less clever than I would label it. I think it is way too easy to fall into old trope ruts, and so random...

    Let's Talk About "Intended Playstyle"

[NOTE: This is another in my ongoing musing threads meant to help me think about my Bucket List RPG. The purpose of the discussion is mainly to see how other folks feel about the subject an dhow it impacts their play and design choices.] I feel like "Intended Playstyle" has fallen out of the...

Humble Bundle Pros and Cons for the Publisher

Honestly, this is a question about how we value the work of our hobby. And, generally speaking, it is "way too little."

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Let me posit a question: all other things being equal, what is wrong with, say, percentile roll under skills while using a d20 Price is Right for combat?

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Do you interrogate every mechanic of every game you play? How do you find out whether it was a "pet mechanic" or one they really thought did the thing, but failed?

Paizo Accidentally Reveals Pathfinder: Feybound Book

I don't think that tracks with 5E vs Pathfinder 2E. The latter is very clearly and intentionally trying to serve not just "Paizo loyalists" but people who want some crunch and tight design in their heroic D&D style fantasy -- a smaller market, but on WotC has obviously ceded.

Humble Bundle Pros and Cons for the Publisher

I too am interested in the perspective of the publishers on this. My experience as the customer of such bundles won't likely add much to the discussion.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Games are designed by, well, game designers, and as far as quirky people go, they're up there IME.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Damage Thresholds have been around forever. When I see them trip people up in DH (and I am not saying this is you zakael19) I can immediately guess they are coming from 5E without a lot of experience outside of D&D. In actuality, that is true of a lot of responses to specific DHisms, because...

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

No thanks. As the GM, I am still playing -- especially when the minis come out.

    That's up to them.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

That is not something I have seen. But at least in D&D-likes, there aren't a lot of choices to be made where crits matter. That is, you can't drit skills, and to-hit values are pretty well set from character generation. I have never seen someone turn down weapon specialization, for example...

    Shadowdark Shadowdark Organized Play?

As the years go by, my back likes it less, because I am a Standing GM.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Dammit, Jim, I'm an engineer, not a statistician! (And a civil engineer at that...)

    Shadowdark Shadowdark Organized Play?

Yeah, I ran 4 4-hour slots in 2 days and it was GLORIOUS. (I don't do 8 AM slots, which why only 2 a day. There's drinking to be done at night.)

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Sure. Again, I was responding to a specific comment. The Marvel game uses a 3d6 pool, but only one (the marvel die) determines a "crit". The result there is a very high chance of a fantastic result, which feels right for a supers game.

That's interesting. How have you seen that manifest?

    I meant compared to 3d6.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark Organized Play?

Tangentially related: is there a Shadowdark only convention? ShadowCon or whatever. I'd love to try a one game convention and can't think of a better game than SD
