Let's Talk About Defining Player Characters

In general, I don't mind "classes" (archetypes, whatever) especially if there is some room to customise. I am not a huge fan of the way 5E does it because you have essentially made your last choice by 3rd level, but systems that offer continued choices within classes are okay. I also like point...

Melf's Guide to Greyhawk Cover by Jeff Easley Revealed at Gary Con

Again, it wasn't a serious suggestion. It was a comment on how ill suited 5E is to the theoretical playstyle in question.

I was specifically responding to the idea that they are going to somehow magically be able to give 5E an old school difficulty feel. Doing so would be to turn it into Shadowdark. But your disdain is noted.

No they are not. There is no world in which that happens.

I mean, just put it out for Shadowdark.

It matters to them apparently. or, at least, the perception of them mending it matters to them.

Let's Talk About Defining Player Characters

[NOTE: this is another thread in my ongoing series to explore and discuss various aspects of TTRPGs as I work toward a foundation for my own RPG. Thanks for participating. Even if we disagree it will be helpful.] There are lots of ways to define PCs in TTRPGs, from classes and levels to skill...

I mean, I don't care one way or another. I just think if the press release talks about healing a rift, it must exist in some capacity between Gygax and WotC/Hasbro. As to Greyhawk: I don't get it. I never have, not even 40 years ago.

If the rift is only between TSR and EGG, there is nothing to "heal" because they are both gone forever. If there is a rift remaining, it must be between the Gygax estate and the owners of D&D and/or Greyhawk (WotC). Right?

Sunday Nonsense: Which TTRPG Systems Survive

It is interesting that those are all fantasy games. Do you play other genres?

Sunday Nonsense: Which TTRPG Systems Survive

To.each their own. 5E, for all its accessibility, is to me a devolution of 3.x. They threw too much baby out with the bathwater, especially in terms of DM support.

I do not think there is any way at all to get "early D&D" out of 5E, even if such a thing were desirable. I get that some people really want Greyhawk to be a thing. I don't know why, but I get it. If Luke Gygax is a good writer and designer, then his experiences should elevate the product. If...

I have never played Mork Borg. I assumed it was an OSR game ala OSE. But added. I think the existence of and ongoing popularity of Pathfinder 1E made it a reasonable thing to differentiate.

Dungeons & Dragons Will Announce New Products at Gen Con, Modules Returning to Game

Has it? We know it was a problem for TSR, but that was more due to the games Williams was playing with distribution. What do we know about how well (or not) Eberron did during 3.x and 4E? What do we know about the success, or lack thereof, of licensing out Ravenloft and Dragonlance during the...
