I am a minimalist DM that leans more towards the OSR - so the handouts, extremely in depth descriptions of everything, etc... are not for me, but I really do appreciate and respect the communication from the Gooey Cube folks here. That's not something you see often.

Yeah this exactly. Same goes for drow and orcs of course. Good thing we still have the old books to use both physically and on D&D Beyond and that they remain compatible.

The simple way to avoid any of this controversy would have been just to have a template or a brief list of species specific abilities to paste onto the bandit, gladiator, or whatever statblock - for orcs, halflings, dragonborn... whatever. Not sure if I am clear on this - so there will no longer be stats for humanoid "monsters" like duergar that include their inate abilities like enlarge? Also aren't goblins, kobolds, etc also playable? Why the selective nature of the stat blocks? I guess I will just be using the old statblocks...

Funny isn't it? That's bad... but burning people to death with fire, melting them with acid, having them devoured by a swarm of insects... not bad. Silly WotC.
