Prime releases a burst of steam with what can only be described as an angry whistle. +++This is the real world, not your crazy delusions+++ +++that this is some kind of threatre+++ +++I'm not an imaginary beign whose reason to exist is to be Someone's entertainment+++ +++We've seen nothing...

+++Shush! Stop shouting. These caves are full of goblins. I don't mistrust their good intentions either. I missed this baseline +1 rule. I can't find it anywhere. Er, my bad then. I'm sorry, I though we were talking about D&D here. You need to fix the story in order to allow the gamist convention of 4 equivalent encounters to take place, simply...

    Rule-of-Three: 07/10/2012

I didn't mention that because frankly those scenarios are grasping at straws. Many, indeed most of the X-per-day abilities have limited or zero use outside combat and the number of realistic scenarios they'll be spent can be ignored. Except of course spell slots. I've not seen any mechanic in...

[Adventure]: The Bane of the Black Dragon (DM: Dimsdale, Judge ??)

Prime removes the armor plate on his right arm and straights it with a few well placed hammer blows before putting it back. Spending a healing surge +++Fighting noise? There must be more goblins beyond the doors, that would explain the mage's minions trying to reach them.+++ +++Though, now...

    Rule-of-Three: 07/10/2012

You missed the point. I don't care if the barbarian, which was just an example of a guy with another kind of daily resources, could apply his rages to the problem, or is useful at murder mysteries. I counted that he won't be able and in fact he'll arrive at the final fight with all his combat...

[Adventure]: The Bane of the Black Dragon (DM: Dimsdale, Judge ??)

The remaining skeletons are scattered, their magic destroyed. Prime watches for a few moments the room, now silent as tombs shoud be. He steps forward, towards the doors the golem was hitting. KERRRUNCH At each step Prime crushes with ihs metallic soles some of the countless bones fragments...

    Rule-of-Three: 07/10/2012

I'm having trouble following you. Not actually, I get the gist of what you're saying, but I'm amazed that you don't see that it's a completely screwed up system. Apparently, in the mentioned scenario the resource attrition comes from applying your limited resources to whatever challenge is...

    Rule-of-Three: 07/10/2012

After all the bashing solos got in 4e (which I'm not mentioning as an example of what's good) for being grindy, a battle with something or a combination of somethings 4 times as long is worrying. Anyway, the point is that the resource system is conditioning how I must design that encounter and...

“…And that’s how we realized” said Thorg, the unusually clever and articulated barbarian of Int 5 and Cha 3 played by John ‘munchkin’ Thompson “that the murderer couldn’t be the butler, and instead was the hound master with the help of a highly trained monkey!” “Yes!” exclaimed the houndmaster”...

    Rule-of-Three: 07/10/2012

Call me crazy, but if I find that the game mechanics clash frequently with the story, as they do 95% of the time when I'm not running a classic dungeon in the room 15 has 3 orcs and room 16 a gelatinous cube sense, the most obvious solution is not to fix the story and instead to do something...

    D&D 5E (2014) I demand randomization in 5e.

I want tables with random stuff in my books. Also font size 15, triple space, huge margins, and lots of sidebars with redundant information.

I'm Sick Of...(D&D tropes that you can do without)

I have many. But the prizes go to: Alignment, probably the worst morality system ever implemented, gets compounded in it's crappiness by the fact that several mechanics and spell interact with them so not only you have to house rule your game if you plan to at least ignore it, if you don't you...

    [Adventure]: Land Ho! FWBTHW (DM:H.M.Gimlord,Judge:Ozymandias79)

Iron Sky, notice that packwolf 3, the one that was adjacent to Phoenix was pulled to J8-K9 earlier this turn. This means you can also attack packwolf 1 and the vine with your Scorching burst, and packwolf 3 with the hellhound attack.

I thought the zones deal damage when you end your turn in them? otherwise I would have posted the damge to the enemies pulled into them. Also Riardon already acted. He's at F10

How are you accessing the D&D Next playtest materials?

Took me forever, but I managed to get them from the WotC website. I would have downloaded them from another source had I found one - my piracy-fu is weak.

As a side note, now that the fight is almost over I think Prime has avoided through powers, negated by damage reduction or absorbed with temporary HP around 100 points of damage or so, not counting the attacks to other characters that failed thanks to mark penalties, cover or attack redirection...

    Working in the Game Mine

The article is interesting and insightful, but I think it misses an additional level of divide which actually goes a bit beyond monster design. I agree that both approaches (the monster make sense in the game world / the monster makes a good challenge if the DM wants that approach to his...
