I'm so doing this :D My SO is no longer intimidated about playing spellcasters because of 4E. Her only critique is that the PHB cover layout is horrible (she's a copy editor).

Flip-Mats are the bomb diggitty. You can use any kind of marker on em (washable, dry-erase, Sharpie). I find myself using them more than my expensive (and now out of production) Tac-Tiles.

I have to admit, though, the DMG index is poo on a sidewalk on a hot summer's day. Looking up traps and hazards will take you on a merry chase that won't leave you anywhere near p.85.

It was a mistake to liken powers to spells, that just triggers the misconception your friend jumped to. Instead, try explaining that all class powers use a unified mechanic*, making any class easy to use, while still maintaining its own niche and flavor. Gone are the days when playing a wizard...

DMG p.184 "Creating Monsters" for monsters. DMG p.85 "Traps and Hazards" for traps. Traps work similarly to monsters (see "Trap and Hazard Roles" p. 85), so you can use the same rules.
