D&D General How do you do smart chaotic evil?

Same here. I don't even like to watch shows with evil protagonists. I watched The Godfather movies long ago but have no interest in watching the Sopranos and the Joker movies just aren't for me. When I do play a bad guy it's because I'm the DM.

D&D General How do you do smart chaotic evil?

There are stupid people of all alignments. CE may mean stupid or chaotic insane - but some people seem to think those are the only options. A stupid or insane berserker chaotic barbarian NPC can be interesting, it's just not the only interesting option.

D&D General How do you do smart chaotic evil?

Might makes right is one thing, stupid is as stupid does is another. A CE may want to fight their way to the top but they'll also understand the consequences if they're unsuccessful. I don't believe in chaotic stupid. Someone that is lawful may not kill someone because it's against the rules...

    D&D 5E (2024) High Level 5.5E: Building Encounter Chains

If you do everything all at once, I'd recommend coming from multiple directions, spread out or even appearing in separate rounds. Otherwise there are too many AOE damage or control spells that can stop them cold.

    D&D 5E (2024) High Level 5.5E: Building Encounter Chains

It's going to vary a bit from one group to the next but I plan between 3 and 6 encounters between long rests almost all of the time. With 5.5 this is a bit easier to implement - all you need to do is interrupt their long rest which simply requires something happening that causes them to roll...

D&D General How do you do smart chaotic evil?

It always bugs me when people automatically depict chaotic as stupid, undisciplined, unstable or uncontrolled while lawful is depicted as intelligent, stable, disciplined and strategic. Those aspects don't have much to do with how I view chaotic. A chaotic person (good, neutral or evil)...

D&D General The D&D Memes Thread

I am NOT going to share this one with my players.

RPG Evolution: Why Paper Beats Pixels

The things that are missing are things like specific species, feats, subclasses, magic items and spells. IIRC feats were missing before because they were considered optional. Each chapter is a single web page and duplicated 1-for-1. Has handy links as well, although of course some people...

RPG Evolution: Why Paper Beats Pixels

I agree ... but I would comment that I don't think it matters (for many people, anyway) if you read a physical book or digital book. It may be easier to get distracted while reading a book on PC or phone, but the research has been inconclusive. While there are no PDFs, the core rules are...

RPG Evolution: Why Paper Beats Pixels

It may matter to you as DM because of your approach to the game. Your approach is not universal nor does it need to be.

D&D General Are you content with what you have in DnD regarding physical/digital material?

I've been painting for a long time, I find it a relaxing break.

D&D General Are you content with what you have in DnD regarding physical/digital material?

I don't use published modules so I don't need any more. More rules are fine but after a while there's only so much you can do. On the other hand I'm a mini addict ... which probably isn't a good thing because my wife got me a 3D printer as a gift a while back. This is just my collection of...

    D&D 5E (2024) How I Would Do 5.75

Like I said, it's a judgement call. WOTC has data and feedback on what a large number of people consider complex. Seems like you consider the choices made while leveling up to be more important. Other people? Other people base their ranking more on play at the table and don't spend a lot of...

    D&D 5E (2024) How I Would Do 5.75

Wizards may have more choices when it comes to picking spells but once those spells are chosen monks and sorcerers have more complexity in spending a limited allocation of focus or sorcery points. Their power is directly affected in how they spend those points in combat or hold on to them. It...

    D&D 5E (2014) Solasta 2 Announced!!!

We do custom backgrounds - always felt odd to associate the origin feat with the ability score adjustment.

    D&D 5E (2014) Solasta 2 Announced!!!

I'll probably do a playthrough, provide feedback and set it aside for a couple of months.

    D&D 5E (2014) Solasta 2 Announced!!!

While BG 3 is a better game overall for many people, I think Solasta 1 was a better implementation of the D&D rules. BG 3 felt very much like a Larian game with a D&D paint job for me. I decided to support the devs and get early access but haven't had any time to do playtests yet. Maybe this...

    D&D 5E (2014) Solasta 2 Announced!!!

Considering the size of their team and their budget, I enjoyed the game. Don't expect AAA writing from a AA game.

RPG Evolution: Why Paper Beats Pixels

I've found many, many times in life that people just figure out how to plug in numbers or do things by rote and not really understanding they why. Even for more complex things like software development. I've almost always wanted to know how things really work and understand. But for a game...
