Sexism and presumed sexism in RPGs

It's a pity that's your experience and I doubt if you're alone in seeing it that way. It also seems unlikely to change any time soon. This recent quote from a WotC post by the guy in charge of D&D Art kind of suggests there's some way to go yet: 'I'd like to dismiss the term sexism for a bit...

New RPG Company Casting All Women for Genesys

It's the 'revolutionary' that says it's made for a 'most amazing game ever' thread at RPG.Net.

To Kill or Not to Kill (PCs): That is the Question...

Out and out, unrecoverable PC kills are few and far between - as there's so much fuel in what you can work in around a PC keeling over. Passing NPCs find the body first and hook the PC's slumped form up to a Lich's blood supply to prevent the PC bleeding to death . . . or the PC's remains get...

How to deal with a problem player

Show him the cheesecake/ pizza/ chocolate the group are having at meal break and explain that his share is already on the line. This isn't necessarily fair or reasonable, but tasty food is often at least as persuasive as words :)

    Nature's Role in Your Campaign

I've no hesitation in turning a party's cross-country hike into a bit of an ordeal, but monster fight after monster fight - not enough options for story, pacing or mixing it up in there for me. I suspect these DMs are maybe of the my monsters v's your PCs variety?

Harry Harrison's Deathworld meets Poison Ivy is good with me.

Black Box GMing - Would you play with it?

I'm maybe thinking/ playing in terms of a different kind of black box than presented by the sandboxy, rules as light as possible to arrive at improvisation approach. The rules are very much there, but the types of rules chosen are scalable systems that allow the GM, and players, to in effect...

Black Box GMing - Would you play with it?

I've a post of a short, unusually combative actual play of a session along these lines. The player - 9 - was largely oblivious to the rules, but had played numerous sessions. She, therefore, had a good idea of what to ask and where it might lead; plus a PC sheet with just a bunch of pictures to...

    Ignorance is Bliss

So long as you're not pissing into the wind all should be well :) And yes, the excitement, 'wonder' does lose its shine at the point when a game's being given a colonoscopy.

Black Box GMing - Would you play with it?

Played lots of this style with younger players who aren't remotely interested in crunch. Not so much descriptive as narrative exchanges. New players can use some prompting from the GM to start with, but the GM's the only one who has to know or shape consistency within the framework.

    BarrowMaze 2 at Indiegogo

The IndieGoGo structure comes across as different rather than worse. It can, for example, give an earlier turnaround because funding is available to get started at a much earlier stage. A key think looks to be to check what the plan is if something doesn't make its target, i.e. the money is...

    An open letter to WoTC

Not so much the kit, as how they use it. Comparing the two front pages shows a 20 year gap in page design. The Pathfinder site just takes you straight to the info :)

Can't downlaod Playtest (Bad Request - Invalid URL; Error 400)

I make no claim to be a lawyer/ copyright expert - I'm not, so a Mod could maybe call by and check please. But this approach would seem acceptable (?): remote desktops

    It's a peach

That's part of what I'm liking. It seems genuinely open to supporting combative styles plus more storytelling and exploration based stuff. Not clear quite how all that'll pan out - but I can see how one or all options could fit into sessions.

    It's a peach

Blogged briefly earlier on how things were looking a shade pear-shaped on the download front. Turns out the design is a peach. D&D had gone from a straightforward shared language to a shared language with a dialect that everyone was supposed to like and learn. By stripping back to a...

    The playtest has begun

There's still a sunny evening out there, so I'm back off outside for a couple of hours. Maybe then. 30,000 views is peanuts to cloud servers, so it may be something other than volume that's causing the delay.

    The playtest has begun

4 hours on and Scotland's still waiting to get a look at Next. On the plus side, it should be amusing to hear about the terrible technical complications and overwhelming data transfer involved in the downland of . . . a handful of PDFs. Goes they must have had an old i386 lying around and...
