D&D General Has 5e become noise?

Most people who play 5e don't follow any news of any 3pp coming out - they're extremely unplugged to the RPG scene outside of (maybe) new WotC products, sometimes. The bulk of the 5e audience plays the game without buying much of anything. Also, its kind of irrelevant if there's tons of 5e...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Both Mearls and Crawford have clarified that the first reading is the correct one, multiple times. Yes its not the best rule in a lot of cases, but that is what the rule is. The design intent is that it should be hard to prevent resting. Note that 5.5 CHANGED the rule, but the end result is...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yep, and you can still do time-pressure-attrition as a treat if you do a few low-stakes encounters back to back. Its pretty good stuff.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Random encounters work as good time pressure tools in OSR games since any encounter is likely to cause one or more PC deaths. In more modern play culture its generally considered bad form for a PC to die to a random encounter. Notably, the 2014 DMG specifically tells the DM to avoid doing this...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Unfortunately, that isn't how resting works in either the 2014 or 2024 versions of 5e. In 2014, any interruption to a rest less than 1 hour does not stop the long rest from completing successfully (Confirmed by both Mearls and Crawford). So a random encounter fight will not change anything...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Sometimes being a good gamemaster means being a little antagonistic.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Game designers clearly present how to run the game in the guide on how to run the game->Players ignore the guide on how to run the game->Game doesn't work. The mantra that "there's no wrong way to play d&d" has produced tons of mediocre games. Can't believe a game called dungeons and dragons...

Fabula Ultima Hardback & Bestiary Vol. 1 Kickstarter

How modern do you need it to be? My favs are pretty old. My recommendation would be: Final Fantasy 6 (ATB) Chrono Trigger (ATB) Golden Sun & Golden Sun: the lost age (Turn based) Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (Strategy) Tales of Vesperia or Tales of Symphonia (Action RPG)

To some extent FabU feels like a "greatest hits" collection of good mechanics from a whole bunch of RPGs, but they all mesh pretty well together rather than getting in each others' way.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024: Is disabling a trap now automatic?

Note that this is true in 2014 as well, and there is an example of play in the DMG of just that: " Foiling traps can be a little more complicated. Consider a trapped treasure chest. If the chest is opened without first pulling on the two handles set in its sides, a mechanism inside fires a hail...

Yep, its a very common trope across JRPGs for the Player to get some scenes that still remain a mystery to the Characters.

Dungeons & Dragons to Release Lorwyn: First Light, a New Digital Expansion Based on Magic: The Gathering World

Yep, and for me "dndbeyond exclusive" means "basically doesn't exist". If I can't own it, I don't want it.

I have! Try to let the players really run with the worldbuilding segments - listen to how they answer questions and try to incorporate those into the villains' goals and the scene dressing. Blair and Cassandra have the biggest ties to the story.

    Fabula Ultima general thread [+]

Fabula Ultima is inspired by classic JRPGs - specifically games like FF6, FF7, Chrono Trigger. The game tries to emulate the stories and vibes that comes from those games. That is - heroic stories featuring an ensemble cast of protagonists with simple but clear personalities, and clashes...
