    Music Tastes

What I meant to imply was that those were examples of bands I listen(ed) to. Nothing more.

    Music Tastes

My tastes tend to be all over the place these days. I cut my teeth on classic rock/AOR radio young (ah, a land of jean-jackets, combs in back pockets, & babysitters with strange-smelling belt clips), moved to college radio in junior high (New Wave, old school punk, some synthpop), tried out the...

    Rap/Gansta: Perferences?

You and I have very similar tastes. The closest I can get to "gangsta" is Ice Cube circa 1991. I'd probably listen to current rap more if the prevailing style hadn't changed much (paints me as the old-timer I am, I guess); <old man voice> "I 'member back when rap had a BEAT"</omv>

Dealing with depression, anxiety, and ennui

I can't agree enough--there are plenty of people who really can benefit from medication, but EVERYBODY can learn more effective ways of dealing with life thru CBT. Do a good thing. Do it again. And again. Repeat. It works for some of the folks in the worst of places.

Share the Tale of the Worst Date Ever

OK, a little groundwork to explain... Back in the day, when fire and wheels were young, I attended Johns Hopkins University. A lovely lass drew my eye; we had no classes in common, but at JHU, all the freshmen know all the other freshmen. I was in the Horrible Romantic Poetry phase of my life...

how to hit on girls without being creepy?

To be honest, I don't think the whole "meeting new people" phenom implies only 2 possible strategies (#1. Be nice & sweet & reap the consequences; #2. Be a "jerk" and reap the consequences). I think there's much to be gained from combining these approaches. I certainly don't rate myself a...

The hell with Wall of Air, bring on the Blade Barrier!

    Christian Magic

If you can find it (got mine from a good used bookstore), try Myths From Mesopotamia: Creation, The Flood, Gilgamesh, and Others, translated by Stephanie Dalley (Oxford Press). I've been reading the Bible & Greek/Roman myth since second grade, and reading this collection REALLY draws themes...

Overused DnD words for 2005 (it's that time again) [merged]

I got a fever, and the only prescription is...MORE HARRY POTTER! ;)

    What's your screenname mean?

Cribbed from Mage: The Ascension (where it refers to the Nephandi "anti-spheres" of magic), which in turn cribbed it from the expression describing the negative aspects of the sephiroth of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life.

I just ate the Red Violin of pizzas

Best pizza I've had... #1. An acre of Sicilian pizza had sometime in the late 80s in a nameless NYC pizza shop. Ordering the thing felt like a vicious family argument; best I ever had (even 1 day later). #2. A weird, "customized" pie had at a no-longer-existing place in Northampton, MA whose...

    2005 New Year's (Gaming) Resolutions

My 2005 goals: 1. PLAY! (as a PC); 2. Start up the world-building project I've been "researching" (i.e. reading mounds of material, picking what rules I like, drawing maps); 3. Call up some of the old friends and get my own game going for the first time in almost a decade.

    How does Boromir keep fighting?

You're telling me! I'd gone through 3/4ths of the posts before noticing the year-stamp. (after a few beers, mind you)

Do you really like Star Wars?

Never read the fiction beyond the novelization of Eps. 4-6; haven't played any of the video games (though Battlegrounds interests me). When Star Wars first came out, I was 7 years old and couldn't wait for that happy day when I'd be driving cars without wheels. Loved Empire (despite its...

Which is your favorite on-screen Star Wars lead female character?

Natalie Portman is easiest on my eyes, but Carrie Fisher (either through the dumb luck of slightly better lines or better acting under Lucas' direction) takes my vote. And then there's Ackmena!

    What ails you?

That's a great thing to hear. I myself have been dealing with clinical depression for nearly 15 years; I ended up derailing my college education and sabotageing a long series of personal relationships (including one that ended quite painfully last night). After a few years of recovery, during...

    What brings you joy?

Cats Babies--though the not-yet-verbal, not-yet-walking-on-2-legs kind--the less acclimated to human society, the better (I can't quantify the joy in a pure (gas-caused or not) smile on an infant's face). Relatives who don't mind my appreciation of the previous 2 selections

    the FLGS list

More votes still for a couple of places: Pandemonium Books & Games in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA (lots of new & old releases, fiction & non-fiction books, & a very knowledgeable staff); Your Move Games, in Davis Square, Somerville, MA (more minis & MtG-focused than Pandemonium, but a great...
