D&D 5E (2014) Reality Check: What 5E Will NOT Be

All of that sounds likely and very playable. However, I think you've hit on the snapping point for the spin-off Edition War. Without Comeliness it's obviously not D&D and I need to never read the game, never play the game, slag it off to my mates and send the designers hate mail - seems...

    It's not just your father's D&D

Nothing like change to get the hackles up. What looks more interesting is the potential to appeal to a majority of current players plus draw in new players. The designers could have simply tried to out Pathfinder Pathfinder or focused on transferring most 4e players as the first priority...

    It's not just your father's D&D

If the reports are accurate WotC explained the underlying design that ensures that 5e will be quite different right at the start of this week's presentations. Their 'language-based' approach is in line with the methods being adopted by videogame designers looking to make more open-ended games...

How to ease players into a sandbox style?

Enough whats to power a bulb (badwrongpun), but I couldn't agree more. If players aren't familiar with coming-up with their own ways to think of cool stuff to do it seems a lot more useful to look at how we prompt them; instead of assuming they are incapable of coming-up with cool stuff and...

How to ease players into a sandbox style?

:o I was in a rush both posts and didn't explain well. For sandboxes I propose they get a selection of overarching frameworks that suggest a wide range of challenges/ activities/ stuff to do - including killing monsters and stealing their life savings. So I might sketch out through NPCs, etc ...

How to ease players into a sandbox style?

Quoting myself - slightly scary. I'm not suggesting a jobs listing. Instead asking the players if they prefer to prepare for war and all that comes with it, or would rather head off to explore strange lands and cultures, or fancy investigative gameplay. As the PCs get further into each option...

How to ease players into a sandbox style?

Maybe NPCs and news/ rumours serving-up choices with fairly obvious possibilities? E.g. arrive in town to talk of invasion, plus an invitation from an NPC who's off to colonise a newly discovered continent plus fears about a series of murders down the docks.

List OSR products for 1e AD&D

There's no doubt there's plenty of Old School scenarios/ support out there and that this includes some decent material. However, there seems to be a bit of a shortage of sets of linked adventures/ campaign settings. The G and D series, City State of the Invincible Overlord and a few others go...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition should most resemble?

I'm usually playing for a balance of game and story, so the rules are placed well behind player choice. I see the problem when the rules come first and the rules model or favour certain types of outcomes. Rules rule doesn't really crop-up round the table, as there's an understanding that if...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition should most resemble?

You have a point about slowing play down, but just as a fallen Paladin should have his spurs chopped off in front of the chapter house, so too should an undead creature strike fear and trepidation into PCs' hearts. If this raising of the stakes extends into the meta-game and lasts - due...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition should most resemble?

No level drains? Not even an ability points off drain option? How am I meant to make players scared of the undead? :)

List OSR products for 1e AD&D

Can you suggest examples of what you would like. I've a raft of adventures under preparation which all run on Osiric, full S&W, Advanced Lab Lord, Corruption and . . . to the extent that everything includes ascending and descending. Be interested to know what's of most interest scenarios and...

List OSR products for 1e AD&D

Can't comment on versions and the original rules, but I'm working on a general Old School resource for OSRIC, full S&W, Corruption, full Labyrinth Lord, and the soon to appear cut-down Corruption - Renegade. There's the beginnings of a list of links HERE. Any further suggestions of OSR blogs...

Don't encourage me :) Colouring and texturing materials is a key area of research - as a spin-off figures will get many coloured and surfaced clcikable parts pretty soon. Meanwhile even small figure manufacturers will be able to attach a very simple precision spraypaint circuit board to a...

[Play Report] DMing for Middle/High Schoolers

Pressure puzzles such as flooding chambers, burning buildings, worm-eaten floorboards and advancing lava flows can have plenty of solutions, allowing new players to be as effective as someone who knows the solutions offered through knowledge of the rules. Maybe the dragon's a bit of a magpie...

Gaming Fans Absolutely Blow My Mind - A Rant

Compared to many politicians, almost all TTRPG players are trustworthy, open to negotiation and prepared to put a friendship before an edition. New editions serve the valuable purpose of identifying people who would put an edition before a friendship
