Amount of Text and Book Layout

Depends on the fluff to crunch ratio you are working with. If you're presenting a system that's crunchier than a bowl full of Portlandia Birkenstock wearers, diagram it up and use art as a filler. Years ago, I used to really dig the fluff. Now I find myself reskinning and divesting packaged...

    Recent Dragon Mag Article Pulled?

What's interesting to the stereotypical white, middle-aged Protestant male player may not be the same as what's interesting to other demographics. We all come into things with a perspective shaped by our experiences and our origins. Marketing & research are valuable tools in finding out what...

    101 Peasant Games

Local fair favorite remains: climbing a pole that's greased partway up... Heh heh. Then there's the perennial "throw gourds as far as you can," which gave rise to pumkin chunkin.

Yeah! Time to get some industrial strength insecticide.

D&D 3.x 3.5 arcane friend or foe marking

Hey, thanks for all the replies, folks! TBH I'd forgotten about Complete Arcane; I'll review the PrC. At least as much as anything else, though, I find the 'flavor' of the marking more compelling than Sculpt. A +3 adjustment and 'arcane mark' requirement may do the trick. Also, I had a...

D&D 3.x 3.5 arcane friend or foe marking

I was just explaining the concept as it applied to the source game. :)

Overland Travel: a return to Hexploration?

I don't usually do much to simulate overland travel in my current playstyle. We may do a lot of narrative. However, I usually have encounter setpieces depending on which way the PCs go. They're following an imperial highway now, which means good headway. I like the notion of 'hexploration,'...

D&D 3.x 3.5 arcane friend or foe marking

I've been playing Tales of the Abyss lately. A small note in the fluff on the game's magic system intrigued me: 'friend or foe' marking, whereby a magic seal is placed on individuals caster A may want to selectively affect or shield from an AOE (which caster A casts). For example, the caster...

Sagiro's Story Hour: The FINAL Adventures of Abernathy's Company (FINISHED 7/3/14)

Shilsen's Eberron, EternalNewbie's al-Qarim, and Talien's Beginning of the End SH are all pretty awesome. They're still on the first page of this forum. An Abernathy update was what I needed to begin the last day of this month's classes without being ragingly cranky. :)

Overland Travel: a return to Hexploration?

I actually used the "mob" from the DMG2 to simulate a stampede of water buffalo through the PCs' camp. Good times were had by all... Except the stuff that was trampled.

suggestions needed! - minimize "stuff" that i have to bring for dm'ing each session

I know some folks are working like apps like that... as for complete ones, I don't know that any exist. My low tech recommendation is, as always, Excel.

suggestions needed! - minimize "stuff" that i have to bring for dm'ing each session

Miniatures are new school? My dad has some ancient lead figures he painted back before I was born, sometime in the 70s-80s. (He's the one who got me into the game, and my mother as well, and I got my friends into it, and I'm sure one day my spawn will be players too.)

It'd be funny if it wasn't so close to the truth

It's particularly tragic when you have the catpiss men (and boys). It doesn't seem to be that frequent among the gamer girls. Not entirely absent, but... Not really that common. YMMV; most of my groups have been female-dominated (but by no means all). I suppose that after a while, one becomes...

Overland Travel: a return to Hexploration?

a mechanical question: what's the standard dimension of an overland hex? I'd like to partially implement this in a game, but I don't know how 'granular' to make a hex map.

    BESM D20 question

Typically, BESM is "once you've paid for it, it's yours," so if a PC's servant dies, they get another ("free")--though there may be other consequences at the DM's discretion. You can get a new servant at any time. There's nothing RAW for whether the player or GM designs it AFAIK.

D&D - Mediaval Social, Political & Economical Structure.

As far as I know, it's not really the practice to, ah, "tidy up" the law books and remove outdated, redundant, or contradictory law & precedent. Doing so would be costly, among other things. (Also, if we ditched all the blue laws, we wouldn't have them to joke about.)

D&D - Mediaval Social, Political & Economical Structure.

As someone who's recently suffered through incalculable hours of education on the US federal tax system, I'd like to note that most Americans also pay income & employment tax on a pay as you go basis--as long as they're employees, and not self-employed (that is, not independent contractors). Our...

The Five Famous People you Would Most Like to Play an RPG With

I'd want to play a game of Dread with: Chuck Palahniuk Neil Gaiman Sigourney Weaver Ridley Scott Neko Case Actually, any game with that group would be great--but I think Dread particularly. (I'm on a kick... Hm.)

[Dread] Jenga beat up my dice! My results from the indie horror RPG.

I do think it's possible to structure a campaign of sorts--but it would be very episodic, considering it's likely that none of the PCs will survive a given session. I'm dying to run a Dread game after sitting in on one at the Boston gameday; I don't have a local group, but one day...! This just...
