D&D 5E (2024) New Campaign: Should I make the switch to 5.5? (SOLVED)

I 100% agree that "modern" design tends towards simplicity and I think Shadowdark punching so far above its weight class is clear evidence of what a lot of folks actually want in their TTRPG experience. I am not prepared to predict that 5.5 won't last, but I DO think that 5.0's relative...

D&D 5E (2024) New Campaign: Should I make the switch to 5.5? (SOLVED)

I think the main questions are: Does your group want more crunch/mechanical complexity? Are you okay with combat being a little slower because, again, more options/complexity? There are legit reasons for your answers to be yes or no. If both are "yes", 5.5 is probably good for your group...

    D&D 5E (2014) Do You Start At Level 1?

Is 16 hours on levels 1-2 "quickly"? At some tables, that would be slow. In recent years, the official WotC campaigns generally get the party to level 3 after ~8 hours. I think people don't realize how much pacing varies from table to table.

    D&D 5E (2014) Do You Start At Level 1?

It's always hard to gauge what people mean on things like this if you don't know how frequent their sessions are, and how long they are.

    D&D 5E (2014) Do You Start At Level 1?

I generally start at level 1, but the progression to level 3 is pretty rapid. I will generally get a group to level 2 after ~4 hours of play, and level 3 after an additional ~8 hours. Thereafter, levels every 12-18 hours of play. I have never run a campaign that started at level 1 that ended...

D&D General Besides Nimble, are there other stripped down versions of 5e...

I've been following Moldvay on Mike Mearls' Patreon and it's very interesting. There's a lot to like about it. Of course there are some things that make me say "Wait- why are you doing that?" but it's an evolving system and he's experimenting. Shadowdark was the first thing I thought of, but I...

WotC $HAS Fourth Quarter 2025 Earnings Call + D&D and Chris Cocks on AI usage transcript excerpt (26Feb10)

D&D IP used for a product that isn't a TTRPG, and likely something that doesn't already use D&D IP (so likely not a video game either, for example). D&D on lunch boxes is closer to what this is.

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

There is usually a considerable lag between the regular release and the B&G release - months. Beadle & Grimm pre-orders usually open at the same time as the regular pre-order, but they ship much later.

D&D 5E (2024) Is WOTC done publishing campaigns?

I think we will see more long-form campaign books, and I think we will see one this year (late in the year). There's been a massive change in the creative team; Perkins was the lead on the vast majority of the campaign books for the past decade and he's gone. A bunch of new people just got...

D&D 5E (2024) Is WOTC done publishing campaigns?

IMO this is mostly a quite solid "do not buy" list, but I would argue in favor of a few on there. Dragonheist - very terrible, yes Dungeon of the Mad Mage - I think this is well worth buying, but not to run the whole as a campaign. Most of the dungeon levels are very, very good and can be...

D&D 5E (2014) Real Emotions at the Gaming Table

Swallowed by giant frog I think is objectively funny. I would not be upset at all. I think the fact that the situation ended with her summoning a horse and killing the toad would be great moment in most campaigns. I have gotten a bit upset/sad when a long-term character of mine - or another...

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

The thing with this is that the Heroes of the Borderlands base box as it's currently produced has a $50 price point. Beadle & Grimm's Dragon Delves DM Vault, for example, which is roughly the same level of physical product as Heroes of the Borderlands if not slightly LESS stuff, is priced at...

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

Re: Thay, At the first D&D Direct in 2023, WotC announced a Red Wizards-focused adventure was coming in 2025 (presumably as a “timely” follow up to the movie) but the project seemed to get scrapped (possibly related to the departure of Chris Perkins) and a kinda half-baked fragment of it, Hold...

Not a campaign adventure, but FWIW Shard of the Accursed in Keys from the Golden Vault is set in the mountains south of San Citlan. I'd love to see many of the Radiant Citadel setting used more in official products. I was happy to see Godsbreath used in Dragon Delves (although I didn't like the...

D&D General Scryer's Guild email From WotC

I have been in this program since 2023. I honestly don't recall an NDA, but I will assume there is one. I think I can safely say that the questions and surveys I've been asked through it have to do with D&D, not Magic.

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

I’m a little worried about the chase sequence, and probably won’t run that bit as written. It’s wonderfully atmospheric but the mechanics are wonky, and the designer is mum on what should happen if the villain escapes. But other than that it seems awesome.
