Stopping the "extended rest after every encounter"

We discussed this very issue in an old thread here. What we liked at the end was a 'carrot' system of small cumulative bonuses to XP that would stack the longer the party kept on fighting without long-resting. Now, the number I was playing around with back then was 10%, and it's the number...

Stalker0's Obsidian Skill Challenge System (Update: Version 1.1) Now with PDF!!

Brilliant as usual. Given that a "3 rounds then resolve it" type of structure is what I've been falling into naturally through lots of playing, I'm confident you've hit the real 'sweet spot' within skill challenge scenes with this. You can bet it's going to be incorporated over here :) To base...

Pramas on 4E and New Gamers

I on the other hand, have used the index quite a bit in my games, and have found it to serve more than adecuately. I would like some actual-play examples of attempts to use the index that haven't worked. I suspect they are mostly theory, as most of these types of things are. For example, it's...

    Reply to ENWorld's GSL FAQ

I think the point of the OP is that Morrus's "FAQ" seems to be making an effort to explain everything except that particular point, which could be argued to be one of the most important in the GSL. It does seem to me that in the effort to give very simple, very satisfied and slightly snarky...

podcast: 4th edition combat too long

Actually, you have a point, I've ran into the 'mash the hotkey' thing in my own games as well to a certain extent, and I'm currently brainstorming about how it get around it. It also didn't help that the room/board was literally a solid gray square =/ Or at least that's what came across on the...

Nominate Stalker0's skill challenge maths thread for sticky status

While I agree that it should be read by everybody with questions about skill challenges, I think if that thread were to be stickied here it would be taken by people in general as some sort of endorsement or support of the ideas within, something like ENWorld itself standing in criticism of WotC...

When do Dragon and Dungeon go subscriber-only?

Ah thank you, I thought that article was all-fluff :)

When do Dragon and Dungeon go subscriber-only?

Could you please point me to the new magic items and the new paragon path... I'd be interested in those but can't find them anywhere on the webpage (it's not very well organized though).

podcast: 4th edition combat too long

I think you have to take into account the situation... a bunch of employees thrown together and told to pretend to be friends and have fun in front of the camera. On top of that, mixing R&D people with Sales & Marketing people. Never a good idea that I've seen. And at least one person in there...

    "Fun"

So this term "badwrongfun" means what... That you just can't deal with someone or something trying to give you advice on how to run your game? It's just such a horrible and critical event in your life to --read a paragraph on a piece of paper-- that you actually need a made-up word to describe...

    Opportunity Attack Rules Clarification

Penalizing a combatant for trying to just cheerfully step away from melee combat is the entire point of having Opportunity Attacks in the first place, it wouldn't make any sense otherwise. Be sure to come back and share what the supposed argument from the MM is, I'm curious now :)

    4e D&D GSL Live

I am not a lawyer and I am not a publisher, I am a mere DM with some players, but I will say that the GSL is right in line with WotC's recent attitude of "Let's go ahead and see just how far we can push 'em before they start pushing back", seen in many little ways like the pricing of their...

    What is the difference between....

If you can see it, you have line of sight to it. If you can throw a pebble at it and hit it (even if you have to guess where it is) you have line of effect.

Is Coup de Gras too weak?

I've donde the 'rouge' thing a couple times, it's a bit embarrassing but not a big deal. Especially in the frantic-typing mode that often sets in when playing in a mmorpg or mud without voicechat. Look on your keyboard at the layout of the letters O, U, G, and E. They're almost in a straight...

    Rogues are useless!

Well, sometimes the simplest solution is the best.

Pramas on 4E and New Gamers

Such a weird and strange thing that there are so many differing viewpoints on the ease of layout. I mean, I do believe people who complain about it are being perfectly geniune and honest about their opinion, but, well, my little sister made a character in 20 minutes with nothing but the book. I...

A discussion of Keith Baker's post regarding the Skill Challenge system

QFT, this is, of course, the actual issue here. And the reason why some people (which is to say, the people who have actually played and ran a number of skill challenges with an awareness of what's going on) get annoyed when they see something to the tune of, "Dude skill challenges are fine...

    Crawling

    * Slight KotS Spoilers * During one of the fights in KotS, there's a squad of hobgoblins with a hobgoblin commander. The commander has an ability that lets all hobgob allies within 5 squares shift 3 squares. When he used this ability a couple of hobgobs were prone, but I ruled it that they...

    Another skill challenge solution

I like the idea behind this very much in theory (especially the player-perspective thing), and I think I'll give it a spin on my Thursday game :)
