Does Cthulhu count as a character? I am not so sure.

A god house system is versatile and can be molded to fit different IPs and genres. I think 2d20 has proven itself to be that kind of house system, with games of pretty wide varieties of crunch vs simplicity, etc.

We made our own for our setting, which is I think part of the intent behind them. I think that is a rosy view of how MCing is generally used. Most of the time, folks seem to seek out broken combos and power gaming.

I feel the opposite. prestige classes made sense, and often had a place in the world. Dipping for class features via multiclassing is the problem. Just make a Gish class.

I generally like Ennis, but The Boys is definitely one where the adaptation is superior to the inspirational media.

There is an easy solution to that: eliminate it.

Right. I don't mean "Why is there a first level?" I mean "Why is first level training wheels?" 5E is the only edition to ever do that. Obviously character got more powerful and more complex as they leveled in previous editions, but no edition besides 5E has said "Character generation isn't done...

Maybe they are changing the way they present adventures and dispensing with the walls of text and pointless prose. With some word economy, you could easily cut most WotC campaign length adventures in half without losing actual adventure content. I don't think they are doing that, but they could.

That sort of repurposing is the YZ engine working as intended: it has a strong framework for general play, and then tools to dial it into a specific genre and/or playstyle. It is what makes it a good house system. As opposed to, say, d20 which was not as good of a house system.
