The thing I miss most from AD&D is...

The adventures. For various reasons AD&D had my favorite modules.

If [insert company here] produced a collectors edition...

I'd buy reprints of classic AD&D books and modules in a heartbeat, so long as they aren't tinkered with too much. Proper indexes and the inclusion of errata would be great but I wouldn't want other changes.

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

In 3rd edition, you would use relevant skill checks (such as profession: engineer along with profession: carpenter). In AD&D you would use a secondary skills (from page 12 the DMG) or non-weapon proficiencies.

    Chargen Fun, Game not-so-much

This discussion got me thinking about a recently published game that fit this description... Aces & Eights We had a blast making up characters but found that the simulationist aspects of combat mired the game down.

    Chargen Fun, Game not-so-much

I'd go with I.C.E.'s Rolemaster or MERP games here. I loved the options and room for growth that were built into chargen. Unfortunately both games were too bogged down by their rules to play for an extended campaign (at least they were back in the mid 80s when I was an early teen trying to...

    Help me understand OSRIC

Sorry to disappoint you but I'm not WotC's Chris Perkins. I'm just a teacher with the same name and too much time on his hands.

AD&D 3?? Perhaps some can help me find this

Just so you know, I'm not THE Chris Perkins who works for WotC... I'm just a geek who happens to share his name. Glad you enjoy my Castles & Crusades + D&D houserules!

AD&D 3?? Perhaps some can help me find this

    Your Google-fu is strong miscreationist!

    Do you consider 2nd edition AD&D "old-school"

The way that I ran 2nd edition for a while felt old-school... it was very much a free-form, sandbox type of game. That said I don't think that the system was an old-school system, especially once class kits, racial splatbooks, Skills & Powers and Combat & Tactics are factored in.

    Question about 3.x skills.

I'd go with a Search check. If you have a good Search skill, you'd know the best places to hide stuff.

Which RPGs are you currently playing?

I'm currently playing Castles & Crusades, Traveller, D&D 3.5, Deadlands, Star Wars (d6) and Call of Cthulhu.

New player asking for some advice/help, please. 3e vs 4e. Which one is for me?

I'm going out on a limb and giving you an answer of "neither". I'd say you should go with Castles & Crusades. It is simple, flexible and made to be houseruled. If you want to invest your time into "making the game your own" then there is no better game than C&C.

WotC president Greg Leeds and I!!!

If WotC is worried about piracy, could they at least re-release previous edition books and modules through Lulu? The books would be more expensive BUT it would cost WotC next to nothing and I'm sure there would be people out there who would jump at the chance to buy those books (again). Green...

How does pulling old edition pdfs benefit WotC?

I will NEVER follow a subscription model in order to play a game. I would consider subscribing for supplemental materials but, even then, I'd want hardcopies or downloadable content. WotC looks to be moving further and further away from a business model that I could possibly support, which is...

WotC president Greg Leeds and I!!!

4th edition doesn't work for me because it represents a major shift in how D&d is marketed, and breaks from the years of tradition that I value. In AD&D, 2nd Edition AD&D and 3.X, the 3 core books presented the complete rules for the game. Any other books were optional. With 4th edition the...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Just Keeps Looking Better

I had high hopes for Pathfinder but, so far, it is WAY too complicated... basically, it's a ramped up version of 3.5. The changes I've seen haven't adequately addressed the woes of multiclassed casters, endless stacking rules or the headaches of high-level play. I've muddled through 3.X for...

How Has the WotC PDF Situation Affected You REALLY?

The ONLY business I've been giving WotC lately has been my purchase of back-catalog pdfs from Paizo. Now that they've done this, they've completely lost me as a customer. Way to go Wotc!

Exclusive interview WotC President Greg Leeds

I'd hate this!!!! You wind up having no access to the documents once the subscription ends and, most likely, couldn't print the materials you were "renting" while subscribing. Then again I don't like MMO subscriptions or the DDI service either.

WotC Authorized Internet Dealer Agreement (what does it mean?)

True. I should have been thinking in terms of online retailers like FRPGames and RPG Shop. Does this "put the screws" to them if they want to sell WotC products? If so WotC looks like a toxic entity to deal with.
