    GOD RULES: Player's Guide (5e) Previews/Discussion

Small world amigo. Thank you. She is really bad with it, I just have an occasional cough coupled with a splitting headache the tablets won't seem to shift. That seems the best approach but my head is so pickled right now I cannot think straight. Not sure I have the space on each statblock...

    GOD RULES: Player's Guide (5e) Previews/Discussion

Happy Thanksgiving to those on the other side of the pond. Sadly both myself and Mrs Krust are loaded with the flu right now. Hopefully we can shrug it off in another day or so. The reason for this post is to gain some feedback on the idea of changing the name Combat Reactions to Legendary...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

    Hellsing Dracula defeated a Demigod.

Agreed. We beat Graz'zt, 2 Marilith, a Storm Giant and a bunch of other minions a few months ago...easily...and that was after 2 other encounters. Average PC 15th.

That seems to be the best fit. If that's just wolves and bats I'd assume a Kingdom would survive. If it was werewolves and/or ghouls then maybe it's more of a problem.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I agree, it's not obvious how to incorporate it (unlike 4e). on top of that a lot of monsters do not meet the target CR, because the devs think secondary factors are a swinging factor which they are not. But then another factor is players going nova for 1-3 rounds. Rest, rinse, repeat. So to...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Possibly. But in speaking to Gary 25 years ago he noted that at the time he was ousted he was planning a book that reworked all the 'big bads' so they all had d12's for Hit Dice and were notably a tougher challenge. So its clear that making them "do-able" for a Level 10 party is massively...

Which is where verisimiltude gets thrown out the window. If they choose the path of stupidity to fight the PCs on their own instead of using the potentially vast resources at their disposal. I don't remember a single Giant or Titan in 4e being a Kingdom threat. Often in D&D what constitutes...

Vecna: Eve of Ruin. ...Acererak, Strahd, Demogorgon, Tiamat, ...Tasha, Fizban Yes, just keep using them on the covers, no one will get suspicious. ;) I don't have a problem with 'weaker' Demon Princes - I loved AD&D. But the key there was the mortal levels scaled indefinitely (even if the...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

That seems to boil down to the age-old argument where the people who never play high-level D&D (because to them its broken in some capacity) want it removed from the game wholesale so 'we can all' concentrate on the low-mid level adventures they want to see - even though I've been told multiple...

My point being they still are heavily used by the Marketing Department - which tells us these iconic villains are important draws.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Yes and other than the anomalous 66hp Lolth you weren't defeating any of them at level 10, So either you allow levelling above 10th (as 1E did) and include the iconic villains/creatures. Or cap levelling at 10 and ignore the iconic villains.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

The stats are not the issue, it's the verisimilitude of scaling and what lies inbetween each 'rung' on that ladder. In other words how do I get from fighting Orcs to fighting Orcus? But then again, I like Shadowdark, so I am not saying it couldn't be done.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

The key is to keep it as simple as possible. Stop levelling at 20. After that are extremely simple Divine Ranks which will increase less often. But when they do it's a bigger jump (as in 50% power). You get Divine Boons, but very few, exchanging old boons for new each Divine Rank (if you meet...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I'm highlighting how many Adventure books use these iconic villains front and centre and that capping the game at level 10 effectively takes them out of the game.

Tell that to the marketing department.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

You could do that, but remember in so doing you throw away most of the Iconic High-level Villains and Monsters that feature heavily in modern Adventure modules: Orcus, Vecna, Tiamat, Lolth, Demogorgon Asmodeus etc. Personally I wouldn't mind a segmented (Boxed?) approach which divided play by...

You should be looking at approx. 2.25 per Divine Rank above Epic Levels. The .25 is potential magic item increases.
