    Daggerheart Discussion

I think it is important to remember that while "play to find out" is the state playstyle intended for Daggerheart, and advice is given to the GM to "hold on lightly" and all that, there aren't actually any mechanics in Daggerheart that enforce this. You could play DH as linearly as any 5E game...

Wizards of the Coast hiring TRPG Publishing Lead to coordinate third-party publishing

While that is sadly unlikely, I do like the idea of a strong 3PP making a new Gamma World. If it was 5E based, I would give it to Kobold probably, but if it were a whole new thing, I'd pay good money to see what @mearls came up with.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Do people think that if they delete the tweet or post or whatever that it actually makes it disappear from the internet? Weird. When the world already screenshot and shared it, you might as well leave it up...

    Daggerheart Discussion

Daggerheart is not a "narrative game" but it does embrace non-binary adjudication and strongly encourages the "play to find out" model. It is a perfect game for "high prep situations; low prep plots" if that makes sense. I am excited for the Hope and Fear supplement though: DH needs more tools...

Paizo announces 13 Omens, a new horror RPG

That's a strange criticism to level at Paizo when WotC is in exactly the same position, just an order of magnitude bigger (random guess, not an assertion). When the biggest RPG company in the world also only makes one RPG, well -- that seems to be more standard than the exception, doesn't it?

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I find IL can be beneficial for my own behavior too. There are some posters who are not "bad" per se but with whom I just clash. If I IL them, I am less likely to be a jerk myself.

    Play Is Paramount: Discuss

I think character generation fits into the paradigm of the OP. If you are making a character, it is of the top order importance that the character you make enhances play at the table. That means a lot of things, and may include things like making a character that works with a party, and doesn't...

Wizards of the Coast hiring TRPG Publishing Lead to coordinate third-party publishing

That's true of what, the last 6 months at most? Here we seem to be seeing a commitment to offloading development of adventures and setting material to 3PPs. Awesome. that's great. And of course that stuff will end up on Beyond because all official D&D stuff ends up on beyond. But I think it...

Geek Confessional Thread 2024 [NOW 2026!]

Cosmic horror is fine. Existential dread is fine. But leave your Mythos at home.

    Daggerheart Discussion

Even if you CAN degrade Armor or HP in non combat encounters, I would not say they are "important" across all 3 pillars. By its own definition and volition, DH is a game explicitly about heroic combat. It tells you that right in the book.

Paizo announces 13 Omens, a new horror RPG

I am legitimately surprised Paizo is making a game not with their PF2 system. Color me immediately intrigued.

Wizards of the Coast hiring TRPG Publishing Lead to coordinate third-party publishing

Sure. this is very likely what they are going to do. What does that have to do with D&D Beyond? Yes, I know that Drakkenheim is on Beyond, but are you suggesting WotC will only make deals with those 3PP developers that have stuff on beyond already?

    Play Is Paramount: Discuss

I am not sure how common an experience that is, but I will say that a well designed game can bring those things closer together. Or a really good quickstart/beginner box.

    Play Is Paramount: Discuss

Maybe instead of "Play is paramount" the thesis is more "Keeping play in mind will improve the ancillary stuff you do." That feels incomplete and unsatisfying.

    Play Is Paramount: Discuss

The thesis is not that everything is play, but rather than play is the most important thing, so work -- from world building to rules tinkering to painting minis and terrain -- that does not serve play is not optimal. Those things might be fun in and of themselves for the folks engaging in them...
